Well, the things that will get me excited for WMU is just going to the game, hanging out all day, tailgating, and spending the day on campus. Can't beat fun at the old ballpark as Harry Caray used to say.

I personally can't get excited about a game like this. Could ND honestly not schedule a Purdue, Minnesota, or Iowa type of game in place of say Temple and Miami OH on this years schedule?

Probably not because those P5 teams would want a "home and home" series and ND's schedule is extremely tight. ND needs teams that will come to South Bend and not expect a return trip. You also need schedule balance. Even with the best coach out there, you eventually set yourself up for loses scheduling all P5 schools on a 12 game schedule.

That odd?

I thought NDs rep was to play on one anytime anywhere?

Scheduling is always an issue and many refuse to come to Notre Dame for a sure loss and ND refuses to play other than D1 opponents, one of the very few teams who refuse to give in.

No ND fan need apologize as the schedule will remain among the best in the nation.

What are you talking about? Who refuses to come to ND? A sure loss? Have you not been following the team for the past 25 years? WTF?

They will come if we give them
a return game, but we are usually looking for one game to fill the schedule and power five teams won't take the challenge.

Have you watched the last 35 years?

You again? Go away and haunt some other team's board. You are not welcome here.

Is ND willing to "take the challenge" of playing an away game and not getting a home game in return?

P5 programs schedule extra home games because football pays for up to 30 other sports.

It was, when ND was deeper and more talented than all but maybe a couple teams in the country and they could pretty much punk 90% of their schedule most years. Those days are gone. ND is no longer a recruiting giant who can have whoever they want. Now they have to fight among the big boys for recruits. Therefore, they'll still play an extremely challenging schedule every year and travel the country, but they can't just schedule 5 top tier opponents every year, unless their goal is to be be 8-4 every year. They don't have the talent disparity to carry them through the "down weeks" that they once did. Such is life.

Also, keep in mind that in the new playoff system, you must play 2 games to win the national title. Both of those teams that you face are top notch opponents, as opposed to the 1 top team ND once faced in order to win a national title.

Everyone screams for ND to stay independent, but don't realize that comes with advantages AND disadvantages.

The advantages are too numerous to name.

One of the disadvantages involves scheduling. Hard to schedule quality opponents week after week, year after year, when 99% of all your opponents belong to a conference. That being said, scheduling such games should not be impossible if your scheduling 5-6 years in advance. Scheduling 2-3 years in advance - then you get what you get.

Winning cures that. .

Now with regards to playoff sos is also a factor isn't it?
Obviously being in a conference helps you to make it to a playoff so why hasn't Notre Dame taking that route? Is all that's left is watering down the schedule then maybe academics?
I suppose Montana could be available, or maybe even Akron?
At what point do you stop selling your soul.
Since Notre Dame is no longer the benchmark is Alabama and Ohio State the new standard?
How do you suppose Notre Dame reach the Pinnacle if they are only half in?

Ohio State plays an easier schedule than ND nearly every season. Their SOS is almost always a joke.

Notre Dame is no longer the standard, however, they are still firmly rooted in the upper echelon (top 15-20 teams) in terms of their facilities (when the upgrades are complete) and ability to recruit. Therefore, if the talent is retained and developed (two factors that have been an issue in South Bend of late) Notre Dame will be in that conversation with Alabama, Ohio State, USC, Michigan, Florida State, Clemson, Florida, Georgia, Oklahoma, Texas and whatever other schools are going through upswings in the various conferences.

Three things that Notre Dame must do in the next 5 years to firmly entrench itself in that group.

1. They must hire an elite recruiter post Kelly and that coach must focus on talent development. He has to be an energetic guy that the kids are enamored with.

2. They must beat Stanford on a regular basis. ND cannot afford to lose 3-4, 4 and 5 star recruits to Stanford each year. That's a back breaker when you're recruiting from a pool that is more shallow than most.

3. Strength and conditioning must always be cutting edge. They can't ever fall behind again. That was crippling.

Post Kelly?

I hope your not holding your breath?

I only threw Ohio State in there because of what happened last year I know their schedule is a joke but they got somebody back pocket.

Notre Dame gets enough quality recruit so the question is X's and O's vs Jimmy and Joe

The obvious answer is you need both, but which is more important.

I know you understand Notre Dame can only get certain recruits so don't you believe the type of football being played at Notre Dame is just as important?
