ND still had all 4 downs available to score as we could have accepted plenty

What is the right thing to do in this situation you take the points? or you try to delay taking the points and just fall down at half yard line

Sorry meant to say fallen

It's funny, but I was yelling at the tv for the replay crew to overturn the td and call him down at the 1/2 yard line. I knew we lost when they upheld the call.

You never know what would have happened on the following plays. Fumbled snap, false start, etc. Sometimes the defense just needs to play good defense. And they failed in doing so tonight.

Sad to say but the TD hurt the Irish, take the penalty run another play or two and leave 1 second on the field, then the corners would not blow it again

The rule of thumb is you never take points off the board but in this case where Stanford was shredding our defense taking the penalty could be justified. I blame the guys in the booth who confirmed the TD.

you have to try to score. because you never know what will happen if you take a knee. imagine if they overturn the call and then nd gets a holding penalty or facemask. nd just needed 30 seconds of defense. but you had a great season with a 2nd string qb. and you beat sc. not bad if you asked me.

I don't know, when you're behind I think you have to score and go ahead. If it was tied I agree.

I was thinking in the same light...thought Stanford would let ND score to get the ball back....hard to delay scoring...just can not let the big play happen once they got the ball back.

The real problem was Kelly calling the time out after the first down with 35 seconds left I was screami9ng at the TV at that point. Run a play, that takes it down to 20 seconds score or not. Then you still have 3 downs left and a timeout if you don't score. Terrible clock management.

Sometimes you need more than 7 seconds per play. What if you run and get stuffed for a 3 yard loss. And then you pass it and get sacked. I have seen time run out in so many games on plays like that. You need to score first and foremost. And then you need to play 30 seconds of defense.

disagree. make sure your guys are on the same page. call two plays during the timeout. take away a face mask penalty and there isn't even a thread like this.

You can't have your back try not to score with under a minute seconds left. There is no guarantee you will be able to get that final yard. You can't fault Kelly or the players for scoring too soon.

No offense but this is more Monday morning QB garbage. I have never questioned ND scoring a TD in my life let alone a TD this year with the red zone problems ND has been having of late. Once again, there are those who profess to have foresight of the future (after the fact) that could have made a call to not score, knowing they will score, and leave Stanford no time. Wow! How are these just critics writing articles and not kings of the CFB world with such insight - maybe because their insight didn't come to them until two days later and after everything had already played out

The offense did their job. If our defense cannot Stanford from going 50 yards with 22 seconds on the clock there's not much else that can be done. It was a pathetic loss.

Face mask penalty was a KILLER -- 15 yds with clocked stopped -- really tough penalty at that point in the game . Painful painful loss .

I cannot think of any scenario when you are trailing in a football game, that you would want your player to not cross the goal line, I understand some players not scoring when your team is ahead in the ball game, and you are trying to melt the clock. But when you are behind in the game, You have to score and trust the defense will do their job.

Most people pulling for Stanford thought Shaw was an idiot for not burning timeouts during ND's drive. It worked out for the Trees, but if they had lost he would have been roasted.

He took a big risk in doing that, but it ended up working out so he's brilliant. That's how the life of a coach goes.
