I may be off several ranks, but the essence of this fact is really reflective of the way our defense hits and tackles. Drue for example, was laying the wood on GT before his freak injury; but for the most part, we are not a hard hitting defense that looks to separate the ball from the player. Goes back to fundamentals and attitude, and hope we increasingly see the right attitude or mentality on display, starting today.

This has been a concern of mine since about mid season. I don't know if it is the scheme or the players but we don't generate turnovers. Really tired of seeing our CB's never turn their heads.

Pitt,GT and Temple all seemed to literally try to strip the ball from ND players. I haven't seen ND as that aggressive yet.

I just don't think the scheme lets our guys play free and easy. Who was it on Showtime who said that learning the defense was more difficult than Mandarin?

Can't accept that scheme keeps the DBs from coming up and hitting like a ton of bricks. Way too many high tackles in general, and way too many rolling block tackles that miss the mark or simply trip up the runner is on display by the ND defense on a regular basis. The players have to have an attitude and mentality of creating turnovers, and we just haven't exhibited this YET. Once developed, it becomes contagious. Let the contagion begin!

What I am getting at is if the players are constantly thinking, they are not going be assertive and aggressive at times.

Here is an article to shows the defensive mental mistakes against Pitt:

If they were that focused on stripping the ball, how did it turn out in the end for those teams? Last I checked ND won those games and that's the only thing that matters.

Sometimes I see defensive players tackling the ball instead of the person carrying the ball and it creates a situation where extra yards are gained. You tackle the player first.

Deadman....I now understand your view. Yes, there's no question that playing intuitively and having your natural athletic talent take over is a huge plus, and something I've expressed concern over in the past. I do think this is secondary to the mindset of separating ball from player. Not talking about trying to strip the ball as Hville...references above, but rather hard hitting jarring tackles as opposed to our penchant to tackle high and throw the runner to the ground, etc... Again, largely fundamentals and mentality, at least in my opinion.
