Had ND beat NIU they likely would have gotten the 5 seed., which likely means they would played OSU in the semifinals and not had the chance to beat IU, Georgia, and PSU. Of course, ND might have beat OSU in the semifinals.
So, assuming OSU would beat ND in the semifinals, the NIU loss helped ND pick up there impressive wins before losing and finishing 2nd.
