Punter Bryce McFerson, set to enroll as a freshman at Notre Dame in roughly three weeks, finished in the top four in two events at the NCISAA boys track and field state finals, Saturday in Raleigh, N.C. Competing for Metrolina Christian Academy, McFerson finished second in the long jump (22 feet, 8 1/2 inches) and fourth in the triple jump (personal best 44-4 1/2). In February he won a state title in wrestling for the second year in a row.

Way on the other side of the country in Kent, Wash., incoming wide receiver Tobias Merriweather this week qualified for the Washington Class 4A meet in three events — finishing third at the bi-district meet in the 100-meter dash (personal-nest 10.93 seconds), second in the 200 (22.12) and running a leg on Camas Union High's 4x100 relay team that finished third (43.60).
