ND defense

And yet we held them to 268 yds, which isn't that bad. I guess the more concerning part was allowing 131 yds rushing on 34 carries, which is a little high against a MAC team. But that's still only 3.9 ypc, which isn't horrible. However, they'll need to play better next week against the run.

They have a bad offense

My concern is what will happen when ND plays an offense with talented athletes and good QB play? I see a repeat of last year against USC.

I know the transitive property doesn’t apply, but MSU gave up 7 to CMU and has given up 35 to Washington in the first half.

I have to agree. We aren’t that fast sideline to sideline. And today the cmu o line win in the trenches against our d line.

USC will be tough for any team to stop. They led Stanford 49-3 at the half last week. To win that one, we'll probably need to outscore them in a high-scoring shootout, like 45-42 or something like that.

When I look at it, I’m more frustrated with how we get these ref crews that do not call things against opposing teams and all against us. Again the refs gave them 7 to 14 points. I’m watching SC and UGA, the home town crew didn’t miss a beat against SC.

That should have been a personal foul twisting his leg. That should have been a PI against Flores. The PI in the end zone the dude fell. The first roughing was BS.

MF has to go Beast Mode on these guys. It’s just for Aweful. Watch other home teams. They get every call.

USC is absolutely elite, but the more stops you get the better (obviously).

Its Freeman’s propensity to search for schematic answers rather than doing things within his base defense that leads me to have a lack of confidence.

All of this blitzing makes me think they will be less sound fundamentally as well.

Our defense played without Bertrand and Brown to start the game and I think we lost Harper during the game, and we held them to three points in the second half. I was really disappointed in our linebacker play today; and we missed Bertrand!

The linebacker play is muddled by a lack of push by the interior of the D line. The linebackers are stretched to support that weakness up front. Something had better be done to shore up the front...The linebackers should not have to work double duty.

The front 7 will be tested next week. It will determine whether this team is real or just fun to watch

That’s all true, but Kiser over ran several plays and was too slow sideline to sideline, and frankly looked physically overmatched. We saw Sneed getting overpowered repeatedly, juked Out of tackling position several times, and whiffing on some clear shots at the qb. Marist played another good game. Overall, disappointed. And to your point, we really need Gabriel back healthy and ready to go.

Mostly agree, but I’m not giving Marist a pass. He wasn’t very good today either. He looked like FR Marist IMO.

They played to the level of the competition. Looking ahead to OSU which is human nature. Got the win. Move on .

The RB literally ran right by him as Marist stood there flat footed
There was a lot more to that play than Marist. Perhaps he could have seen the ball carrier quicker but he was in a tough spot there.

Look at Bothelo getting ridden upfield. That creates a soft edge. Carter’s blitz was useless there as well.

All that is true, but Marist has to make that tackle. He’s not being blocked and the RB crossed over directly in front of him while he stood there flat footed

Golden did a poor job today. He needs to let the players play. I saw too much thinking and players out of position. His 2 leaders were out and is like the players couldn't figure things out.

Defense should not be too complicated. Let your athletes run and play hard and physical. Too much thinking.

Let them play

That running back barely had to slow down. If Bothelo is closer to the line of scrimmage, the back can’t cut like that out the backdoor with that much speed.

Liufau was actually caught off guard by the back coming out. He didn’t purely just watch him go by. Should he have been prepared for the back to come out the back? Maybe. I’m not sure what ND would tell him in the film room.

For my money, yes he probably should have come downhill outside but then that would have left ND a man short inside. However, its a blitz and ND doesn’t seem to want their guys flying downhill when they blitz if they’re not the blitzer.

The biggest issue is Bothelo and Carter.

Carter doesn’t take the back on the blitz. Doesn’t drill the QB in the back. Doesn’t break down and be prepared to play both. He just runs in there and covers nothing.

Looked like Carter had qb and Marist should have had rb… maybe the opposite was supposed to happen but either way, he let the ball carrier go right by him
