We've had a lot of discussion about Notre Dame's recruiting. Some people are of the opinion that Notre Dame simply isn't recruiting well enough on defense, especially along the defensive line. I agree that Notre Dame certainly could recruit better up front, but I've also been adamant this has been more of an attrition situation than anything else. I've already pointed out that Notre Dame has recruited above several of the playoff teams the previous two years, so I thought I'd look at the star ratings and maturity of the top 20 NCAA sack leaders thus far in the 2016 campaign.
Do me a favour and watch for the trends... Hint... Most of them were developed players, ranked below 4 stars and most of them are now upper classmen who weren't as highly recruited, but who maxed out their their development.
*** Ejuan Price (Pitt): 9.0 sacks. Senior.
**** Demarcus Walker (FSU): 8.5 sacks. Senior.
**** Ifeadi Odenigbo (Northwestern): 8.0 sacks. Senior.
** Ryan Watson (Air Force): 8.0 sacks. Senior.
*** Jordan Willis (Kansas State): 8.0 sacks. Senior.
**** Arden Key (LSU): 8.0 sacks. Soph.
*** Harold Landry (Boston College): 8.0 sacks. Junior.
*** Koron Krump (Arizona State): 8.0 sacks. Junior.
Unranked Randy Allen (South Alabama): 7.5 sacks. Senior.
*** Duke Ejofor (Wake Forest): 7.5 sacks. Senior.
Unranked Haason Reddick (Temple): 7.5 sacks. Senior.
*** Dorance Armstrong (Kansas): 7.0 sacks. Soph.
**** Takkarist Mckinley (UCLA): 7.0 sacks. Senior.
*** Obo Okoronkwo (Oklahoma): 7.0 sacks. Senior.
*** T.J. Watt (Wisconsin): 7.0 sacks. Junior.
Unranked Tarell Basham (Ohio): 7.0 sacks. Senior.
*** Jimmie Gilbert (Colorado): 7.0 sacks. Senior.
***** Carl Lawson (Auburn): 6.5 sacks. Junior.
*** David Moa (Boise State): 6.5 sacks. Soph.
*** Jaylon Ferguson (Louisiana Tech): 6.5 sacks. Soph.
In total, there are 1 five star, 4 four starts, and 15 others ranked 3 stars or less. There are also 12 seniors, 4 junior and 4 sophomores.
Pass rushers take time to develop and you can't only shoot for 5 star players and bust, then leave yourself in a position where don't land the developmental rushers you need in the program as well.
Two examples... Former Notre Dame WDE Kolin Hill is second at Texas Tech in TFL's this year. Former Irish OLB, Nile Sykes, is now at Indiana this year, where he leading them in sacks. Both are considered juniors after sitting out a year, but both are playing their second years of eligibility. Where would Notre Dame be had those guys stuck around, not sat out last year and instead played and developed and were 3rd year pass-rushing juniors by now?
By all means, if you can load up on top end pass rushers, do it. But if I were Notre Dame, knowing what is available to me (us) in recruiting, I would take 2 developmental pass rushing ends / olb's each year and vet them out as kids that are willing to stick it out for 4-5 years. I'd then try to reel in that one big fish every year in the form of a highly rated edge rusher, who won't be scared off by the guys in the class ranked well below him... Stock the cupboard full of these guys, let a couple leave as they see their opportunity for playing time dwindling, but make sure you have 3-4 of them ready to play, with another couple developing at all times. This is a team that never goes into the season with 85 scholarship players. Instead of rewarding 2-3 scholarships to walk on players every year, take an extra defensive lineman (preferably an athlete with pass rushing skills), stash him awa and let him develop for a couple years, while waiting his turn.
Kolin Hill
Nile Sykes
Jhonathan Williams
Grant Blankenship
Bo Wallace
Those are just some of the names of guys that Brian Kelly and his staff tried to recruit as developmental players, unfortunately, the staff did a poor job on due diligence regarding their grades / character.
Recruiting isn't just about landing top classes. It's also about landing deep, balanced, classes. You also need kids that are truly going to value the degree and stick around even if they aren't playing right away, like Kapron-Lewis Moore did, like Trevor Laws did. Like Kona Schwenke did. Compliment a couple of those guys each year with a kid of Daelin Hayes' quality and you'll be fine. Hit a homerun and get a Stephon Tuitt and you're laughing.
