Keep in mind that this is just a Glorified scrimmage, here are my thoughts:
Positives:
1) Even though they will need more time to develop, I likes what a saw of the young DL group of Trumbetti/Hayes/Blankenship/Tillery. Also, while he much more behind then the other DL I just mentioned, I like the upside (HE is real RAW) of Williams at DE.
2) Both QB's impressed me. Golson, looked more focused/poised and ran the read option much better. Zaire, while still raw as a passer, he is just a play-maker with his arms and legs. While I do not believe in a TWO QB system, this is one time I feel that both QB's should play in games.
3) I liked what I saw at WR from Fuller (Explosive) and Robinson (Caught the ball well). Also, liked what I saw from the young WR's Holmes (He still needs time to get bigger/stronger) and Hunter (He Made a great catch over the middle)
4) Loved what I saw from the RB's and the running game. IMO, this will be the best back field talent (As a group), since Lou was at ND. IMO, CJ Prosise, is a potential home run threat at both RB and the SLOT.
5) Liked what I saw at LB from James Onwualu and Martini. Also, it was great to see Grace move around so well!
6) Impressed with the coverage and run support of both Redfield and Shumate.
7) Very impressed with Rochelle. IMO, he has been ND's best DL in the spring. I wish they would move him to DT and move Day to SDE (IMO, While Day is not you typical DE in size, he is really quick and he might hold up better (Not get hurt as much) if he played SDE
8) Liked the all around game (Pass coverage and run support) of Cole Luke
9) I like the ability Nick Weishar showed catching the ball and getting into the endzone. I know everyone is high on (and right fully so) on Alize Jones, but do not forget that Nick is a talented player at TE (He just needs to keep working on getting bigger)
10) Last (BUT NOT Least), I liked the size (We have some Giants), Physicality (I feel the 3 inside guys of Martin/Elmer/Nelson can be ASS KICKERS) and Talent of our starting OL. Also, I liked some of the young players (Nelson Bars, Sam M) OL. IMO, In time, Nelson has all american talent at OG.
Negatives (Remember this is just a scrimmage, so a lot can change - Both Good and BAD):
1) The Punter ( He is still a FROSH - So he has time to get better) did not look good
2) Pass rush is still a big concern - I rather have Day (He is quicker the Rochelle) play at SDE then Rochelle play SDE. IMO, Rochelle our best DT on the team. Also, While Remeo O plays hard at DE, he is just not a natural pass rusher as a 4-3 DE.
3) We are relying on WAY too many young DL (Hayes/Tillery/Trumbetti/Blankenship) for this year.
4) Kizer - While he is just a FROSH and he played with some walkons, he just did not look good
5) I did not see any other FG kickers (Besides the P), kicking. I hate to have to put all this pressure on an in-coming FROSH
6) While they are still FROSH, DT's Cage, Peter Mokwuah and to a lesser extent Dew-Treadway must all get into better condition.
