While losing one player will not kill a program, Loosing HJ is still a big loss because:
1) He was the Top 2017 QB in the Country (Perception Wise) and when you get the so called Top QB in the country this early, it's great publicity/selling point to other top recruits (Top Players want to play with other top players and getting HJ would of really helped Jump Start 2017 recruiting even more!).
2) Perception wise it hurts ND losing HJ because two years in a row they lost the top player in their Home State (Including the nations NBR 1 QB for 2017 and the top 4 players in their home State this year - 2 of them ND wanted real bad). Other schools such as MICH/OSU/MICH-ST/PSU that we will be recruiting against a lot in the future, will use this against us, especially in our own backyard(Perception means a lot in recruiting, especially with 17/18 old kids)!
3) Getting HJ could of even helped us get some top players (Especially WR's ) in this years class. Getting the top rated QB is always a great selling point
As Far as recruiting goes for this year and 2017 - Here are my thoughts
1) I know it's very early (And a Great season would help change this - Especially Help the 2017 class) but it looks like (So Far) Kelly has made a mistake by making Elston the RC (He is really struggling as a RC right now) . Also, Elston this year has been getting his butt kicked in IND (His Recruiting State) and is off to a bad start in IND for 2017. IMO, Elston is an AVG coach/recruiter . Tony Alford despite the issues I had with some of the type (Bad Fits) of kids he recruited as the RC, was a top recruiter(Something Elston has never been and never will be).
2) By Kelly Making Elston the RC, it could be the same type of big mistake by Kelly (that really hurt him early on at ND) when he made Molnar the OC (when Jeff Quinn left before year one).
3) I know it's early and like I said a great season by ND this year can really help out ND's future
recruiting (Especially for 2017) and help Elston , but as of right now, I just have very little faith in Elston as a RC and a LB coach (I really hope I am wrong!)
