"When you look at the losses Alabama has taken for however long they've been good [under Nick Saban], you see a trend," "You see quarterbacks making plays, you see the passing yards are higher than the rushing yards"

Alabama & Clemson are the measuring stick. Just look at those two defenses. Big, fast, athletic and well coached. They can shut your run game down in a blink of an eye. Heck UGA who is good but not as good as Bama or Clemson, stoned ND cold and made BW try to win the game with his arm.

That is EXACTLY what elite teams will do, not try to do, but WILL DO to ND. BW, Chip Long and BK have got to make the ND passing game work at a high level or ND is a dead man walking against legit competition.

BTW since BK knows 1000 times more football than I do, and 1,000,000 times more football than our average poster. I am 100% postive ND is working very very hard on getting that passing game heated up.

Because against elite fronts 2.5 maybe 3 yards per carry is all you get. That works out to about 100-110 yards on 40 carries. And that is not winning anything.

The Irish need to pass better no doubt. I do think this game was about getting Wimbush to do things he was not comfortable with in the passing game.

Kelly and Long are working on it. They know. They had Wimbush passing in this game when it was clearly over. They are working on it and his confidence. An honest passing game will be what separates the team from winning 10+ games. I still like the identity this team has. They are physical on both sides of the ball each and every week. Better looking team than some of the pass happy finesse teams we have recently.

A productive balanced offense is the way Irish not only to compete, but beat the top echelon in college football

Thanks. I'm gonna send this right over to Coach Kelly.

The Irish need to pass better no doubt. I do think this game was about getting Wimbush to do things he was not comfortable with in the passing game.
Wimbush was definitely uncomfortable, while still working behind a line that gave him an incredible amount of time. I thought he actually looked like he had taken a step back yesterday. Too many side armed throws that were wild and way too many times not seeing his open receivers timely, etc... my impression is he has a tendency to hold the ball until his primary receiver gets separation, and often times that's too late, and then he starts his progression. He is better with long passes up the seam like the one to Boykin, because he doesn't think about it too much, just steps up and throws with good mechanics. I still think Stepherson returning will play to Wimbush's strength and help create the separation he needs to see from the other guys.

It's great sign that worries are for Wimbush arm. His cannon is the best single weapon on this entire team. I can't believe the number of drops when Wimbush has put it right into the receiver hands. They're not easy catches, but they should make the catch. A few other times I see the receiver getting manhandled by the def and no flag called. it happened again on the first pass this week. That will change for Wimbush as he continues.

The receivers need to step up and make catches because Wimbush is making the throws. They're gonna be hanging their heads real low if enbs starts droning on about "ND QB issues with accuracy". It's bad enough he will see it on MB's and hear the announcers on replay. I don't think they will let that happen to their QB.

Didn't get a chance to watch the game, how bad was the passing game? I've heard nothing but negative

I Agee. I think the difference in this game they opened it up too much. Last week it wa short passes and an occasional bomb. I think that is where Wimbush is at. They need to keep him there and gradually grow the play process

It was sporadic - some very positive throws and catches, some drops, some misreads, some WR’s not getting open, etc. All across the board. Highlights were a beautiful long throw by Wimbush to Boykin and a fantastic catch by Finke on a long throw from Ian.

floridairish,

Honest question

Do you like what you've seen in Ian Book with what little time he has played outside of practice?

Thanks homie, catching it now on YouTube... alarming early on

Exactly how long do you propose they baby him? There was nothing wrong with the play calling. Truth be told ND doesn't show the deep ball enough. It backs the defense up.

See those little flare passes against a fast defense is disaster. Even then he throws it at his recievers shoe lace.

They need to stretch the field. Show the threat of the long ball. It's his panic on giving up on the play right before the reciever breaks open that's the killer. The deep in. He has to hang in there and deliver a strike.

Everyone develops at a different rate. most of it is probably how to get him in a rhythm. The other part is QB technique. The technique will be how the coaches and he develop himself during the season and offseason. To limit exposure now he needs his passing progression simplified until possibly later in the game.

Plain and simple . Wimbush is not a good passer ,and in 2018 and 2019 , he may improve to be serviceable ,never a great passer . ND faithful are hoping for a miracle passing attack

Plain and simple Wimbush is a helluva passer. Timing and reads will come. Receivers will learn to catch a ball thrown on a rope or dropped into their hands as if from heaven above. Also, receivers will learn to catch the ball and not jump out of bounds in one move.

I expect lots of running against UNC. Hopefully a good lead and bring in Book. It is good if the team in california thinks Wimbush doesn't have an arm.

Go Irish

They need to get by UNC. At this point a 1 point difference is fine. Just get by them. Then they have 2 weeks to really work on improving the throwing game. I would really like to see them move the pocket more. Roll and sprint passing where the threat of BW legs puts the curl/flat and contain defenders in a bind. 15 yard outs off the Sprint and stop routes are difficult to defend when a D is moving lateral and their eyes move from coverage to contain/coverage.

Didn't read anything after this.
