The offense is a matchup problem regardless the experience of the opponents defense. Texas is rather green but ND could have scored most of those points anyways. Malik showed me what I was hoping for. You can bet he will be spied from now on which takes someone away from coverage. He not only extended plays but was productive doing so. There might have been 1 play he lost yards but outside of the play his tailback went the wrong way and left Malik naked he was tremendous with his legs. I guarantee you he is going to surprise someone when he does lower his shoulder he will blow them up. He is a very deceptive hard runner. His passing is much more polished. The receivers better polish up on catching his ball. It is hard and has the opposite rotation. (Yes it affects how it is caught). I can see some whoops through our hands into a safties hands coming if they don't clean that up. Too many bobbled catches for my liking. We caught them but wait until there is no humidity in the air. (You better believe it makes a difference...the leather gets slick ..and your hands, gloves and ball all lose some moisture that help in catching. Wait until it's raining or damp. Some moisture is necessary. Too much or none is bad. They have to get this cleaned up. Have to.
On defense the verdict is still out. Jaylon played a lot on the outside which was nice to see.
BUT PLEASE TELL ME YOU GOT TO SEE HIS TWO PLAYS HE RUSHED THE PASSER. ? The thing I've been advocating coaches have him do for a long time. His 10 yard speed is second to none. I've never seen a ND defender with a ten yard closing speed like this. Never. When he rushed he nearly got a safety....the other he nearly had a pass deflected.
Why for God sake do they not allow him to play that rush linebacker role all the time? Teams are going to pass. They can't help it. He sucks against the run. He still does not take the block on properly. But since teams will insist on passing just let him go off the edge. They will have to account for him every snap which will allow the DT ...both of them to have a field day. He will still win most double teams because his burst is something nobody has seen. His near safety sack......He got a terrible jump on the snap. He wasn't paying attention, got a late jump, and still blew by the offensive line in lightning speed. BVG is doing the entire team a disservice by not allowing him to go like a maniac every play. Adjust the other personnel to enable it. It's foolish not to have him going after the qb every play.
For those that think he played the middle good....NO. ! One play he was spying the qb....he allowed the center to come 4 yards down field engage on him and that center was walking him right out of the stadium.
They key word here is allowed. He has to be assertive there and smash that center right away. Then break off and run the qb down. If UT had a better line that qb would have had a 50 yard gain on that and everyone would have said where was Jaylon.
I want to see #10 catch the ball and run. Everyone says he is special. Show me.
I have nothing whatsoever to say about the secondary because they were not challenged.
Special teams was ok ....the punt return blocking needs to get much better. That kid can run but will he ever get a chance? BK needs to spend more time on special teams. He is leaving a lot of yards and possible return touchdowns on the field.
Trumbetti is quicker than last year. #99 is athletic.
Clean the catches up....please dear Lord almighty get Jaylon on the edge full time.....
And off to week #2 we go, 1-0
