Even though this is an Irish board I am going to weigh in on the missed Minnesota field goal, in defense of the kicker. In my view the holder is mostly at fault; no, not because of the laces. The ball was placed at about a 30 degree angle with the top of the ball tilted toward the holder. This created the same action on the ball that would be created by a pitcher throwing a slider or curve. As a consequence, the kicker struck the ball on the lower right side, sending the ball off to the left. If the ball had been straight, the ball would have been struck in the lower center; straight and good. And, the holder should have taken his gloves off. Didn't a ND holder have an issue with this two years ago?

Holders generally hold the ball at the angle that the kicker desires, whatever that may be. And every kicker has his own chosen ball placement. Walsh led the NFL in field goals, so I think we can assume the holder knows how he likes the ball.

Except; on the other field goals the ball is straight up.

Best rule about kickers.

Field goal kickers can be your hero. They can't be your evil.

He was the only guy that put points on the board for the Vikings all day. If they didn't want to lose on a field goal they should have been more productive int he red zone.

The thing wasn't close. All on kicker. I like the way the guy stepped up and took full responsibility for it. Those blaming position of the laces are grasping. He kicked a 47 yarder earlier with the laces facing his foot.
