Here are tonight's Lucky Charms...
Notre Dame had all but one of its members of the 2020 recruiting class committed by August of 2019, while last year, the Irish had 14 commitments from August to December. For the 2022 class, Notre Dame already has two August commitments but doesn't have room for many more recruits. The Irish have 21 commitments, and I think they'll end up with 24 or 25 and leave a spot or two open for a graduate transfer.
Some of this post may be a refresher for some of you who follow ND recruiting religiously, but everything I'm about to write in this post is well-sourced and up to date. Here's how the positions break down as we stand today....
Defense: I feel this is subject to change, but from what I'm told, Notre Dame only plans to take one more player on defense in the 2022 class. The Irish have hit their mark with 11 defensive commitments. Between a few defensive linemen (Cyrus Moss, Anthony Lucas and Hero Kanu) and one defensive back (Xavier Nwankpa), sources tell me that Notre Dame wants to land at least one of these guys, but if Lucas and Nwankpa both call up the staff and want in, I have a hard time seeing the Irish not making it work. And of that group, Nwankpa seems like the most likely to pick Notre Dame, followed by Lucas.
Running back: There's nothing new to report here that I didn't dive into last Monday in The Gold Standard. A source today told me there's still no guarantee that Notre Dame takes a second high school running back in this class. If the Irish do take one, Alabama tailback Quinshon Judkins is the likely candidate. He's expected to officially visit for the Toledo game Sept. 11. Judkins having a very strong start to his senior season could make the Irish staff make a big push for him, but in my opinion, I think Notre Dame will end up going the grad transfer route. If Notre Dame loses both Kyren Williams and C'Bo Flemister after this season, having a veteran back on the roster would be nice.
Wide receiver: I feel more confident that Notre Dame takes a fourth receiver than it does a second running back. Although holding on to Amorion Walker is no guarantee, I'm still expecting Notre Dame to keep him in the class. With Walker, CJ Williams and Tobias Merriweather in the fold, Notre Dame wants a speedier, all-purpose offensive weapon to round out its receiver class. Major Everhart certainly fits that profile, and I believe he'll take an official visit to Notre Dame this fall. Xayvion Bradshaw is still in the mix too. The staff will also evaluate other receivers as well.
Offensive line: Notre Dame has three players committed and will likely take one more. Don't rule out Notre Dame taking a fifth, though. The staff is playing the long game with Zach Rice and Aamil Wagner; there's not much new with them. Billy Schrauth -- after being considered a Notre Dame lock for so long -- is now seen as a Wisconsin lean. I spoke to a source recently who told me that Notre Dame feels that some really good players will emerge as seniors. My guess right now is that one of Notre Dame's eventual offensive line signees will be someone who hasn't been offered yet.
That's pretty much it, barring a surprise. Notre Dame is done at QB, TE and linebacker. They'll definitely sign at least one more offensive lineman and between RB and WR, they'll sign 1-2 more. And on defense, I'm expecting just one more player but wouldn't be surprised if it's two.
P.S. Lucky Charms was posted so late tonight because I played pick up basketball for two hours. I am a shell of myself as an athlete, but I'm still 6-2 and the guy guarding me was about 5-10. I posted up, scored a few buckets in a row and for the first time in my life, the defense called out to double team me. Best night ever. Haha.
