Here are tonight's Lucky Charms...
*** In early September, we covered a handful of Notre Dame's defensive targets in the 2022 targets in The Gold Standard and mentioned that Jersey City (N.J.) St. Peter’s Prep defensive lineman Keith Miles Jr. has flown under the radar publicly as a major Fighting Irish target. And after speaking with him and a well-connected source in New Jersey, I believe the Irish currently hold the lead in Miles' recruitment. The likes of Alabama, Georgia, Ohio State, Penn State and Rutgers are also involved here.
*** The only school Miles has visited to this point is Rutgers, but he will get out to Notre Dame and some others once the dead period lifts. His relationship with defensive line coach Mike Elston is very strong, and they've been in close communication since Elston offered back in January. Miles even noted that Elston has become like a father-figure to him. That quote certainly made me think about a FutureCast, but I still want to let this recruitment play out a bit more considering his lack of visits. Another interesting thing to note here is that Notre Dame hasn't offered many 3-techniques in the 2022 class. A theory I have here is that Notre Dame may feel really good with Miles so they don't want to offer others just yet.
*** Another 3-technique (defensive tackle) who Notre Dame has offered in the 2022 class is Columbus (Ga.) Hardaway's Mykel Williams. With offers from Alabama, Clemson, Georgia, LSU and others and asking around about him, I have a hard time seeing him leaving the South. He's been keeping in touch with Elston and defensive line assistant Mike O'Guin. "It was a big one," Williams told me about the offer. "Notre Dame is a very prestigious school. I was very excited to get it."
*** The first Power Five conference offer is in for Red Bank (N.J.) Catholic class of 2022 defensive end Alex Bauman, who is of course the younger brother of Irish freshman tight end Kevin Bauman. Rutgers offered him earlier this week, and UMass offered tonight. Notre Dame has reached out to the younger Bauman to express some early interest.
