Here are tonight's Lucky Charms... Warning: it has news that may make the sunshine and rainbows crowd upset.
*** It was a longshot for Notre Dame to land Scottsdale (Ariz.) Chaparral defensive lineman Anthony Lucas, and I believe that the chances are close to nil at this point. Lucas spoke with Notre Dame today, and I don't think it was good news for the Irish. Lucas is likely heading to the SEC. Again, not a surprise here, but it's noteworthy.
*** Rivals has its announcement guide for National Signing Day posted. Lucas will announce his commitment at 2 p.m. ET Wednesday. Naples (Fla.) High cornerback Devin Moore's announcement is at 8:00 a.m. ET. Ponchatoula (La.) High receiver and Notre Dame commit Amorion Walker will make his final choice public at 10:00 am ET.
*** For the past few days, Notre Dame's key 2022 recruits to close on for National Signing Day were Moore, Walker, Lucas and Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei wide receiver CJ Williams. The intel I shared has Lucas heading elsewhere. Williams decommitted from Notre Dame tonight, which is a huge loss for the Fighting Irish. Moore has already decommitted once from Notre Dame, and coming off a Florida visit, the Gators' side seems more confident at this point. All of the sudden, Walker is the most important recruit on the board for Notre Dame, and some folks close to the recruitment still believe he's going to flip.
*** So yes, Notre Dame could go 0'fer this week. But let's not forget that in the last three days, Notre Dame picked up commitments from 2022 OL Billy Schrauth and 2023 CB Justyn Rhett and I put in a FutureCast pick for them to land 2023 CB Christian Gray. They also firmed up pledges from 2022 WR Tobias Merriweather and 2022 OL Ty Chan. Notre Dame recruiting isn't falling apart.
*** Notre Dame absolutely needs bodies at the receiver position. The numbers are woefully bad, IMO. If the Irish somehow convince all of their current receivers to come back and sign Walker and Merriweather Wednesday, that's still just nine guys on scholarship. That's a low number even if they bat 100% there, which is probably not likely.
Obviously, landing Walker would be ideal, but what if Notre Dame strikes out there too? Remember guys, there is a whole February signing period where Notre Dame can still get another high school receiver or two. Receivers are still a dime a dozen, and there will be prospects out there who Notre Dame can recruit. I would imagine Notre Dame would take a good look at transfer portal options too.
*** Chicago Brother Rice's Jack Lausch was committed to walk on to the Notre Dame football and baseball programs, but he committed to play quarterback on scholarship for Northwestern tonight. You certainly can't blame him for that decision.
