Here are tonight's Lucky Charms...
*** Rivals.com's Sam Spiegelman had an update on five-star class of 2022 quarterback and LSU commit Walker Howard earlier today. Howard was complimentary of Notre Dame and Ole Miss, the two other schools after him, but it certainly looks like he's locked in with LSU, and my sources agree. With that in mind, I'm told Notre Dame offered Draper (Utah) Corner Canyon's Devin Brown, the No. 48 player and No. 4 pro-style quarterback in the 2022 class. Brown hasn't announced his offer from Notre Dame publicly, and I'm not sure he will.
*** Brown has been committed to USC since September of 2020, but with USC's head coaching change, he's very much open to other schools. He had been pretty focused on his team's state title run that fell short last friday in the championship game and not so much on recruiting lately, but he had an Ohio State official visit locked in for a bit, so they honored that visit and made it this past weekend. He's also officially visited Ole Miss and Texas.
*** So where does Notre Dame fit in here? I'm expecting Notre Dame to pick up their pursuit and work hard to get him on campus for an official visit in December. They wanted to have him visit for the Georgia Tech game, but he had his OSU visit set. In my opinion, I think Notre Dame will come up short in Brown's recruitment, but we'll just have to see if they're able to get him on campus for an official visit. Texas is considered the team to beat right now for Brown.
*** If the Irish do miss out on both Brown and Walker, then what's next at quarterback in the 2022 class? First, it should be mentioned that Oradell (N.J.) Bergen Catholic's Steve Angeli is locked in with the Fighting Irish and is actively recruiting other players. His connection with offensive coordinator Tommy Rees is tighter than ever. I'm told it's not a guarantee that Notre Dame takes a second quarterback in this class. The Irish staff is still evaluating various players and doing their homework. My educated opinion tells me that Notre Dame will indeed take a second quarterback, but again, Brown is the prospect they're eyeing right now, but they will move on to other players if that isn't working out.
Buckle up. It's going to be a fun ride to National Signing Day in December.
*** During his press conference today, Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly was asked about his recruiting plans for after the Stanford game. As we've reported, Kelly will be spending some time out west right afterwards.
"I will stay out on the west coast," he said. "We have a number of mid-years coming in, so it's important that I get to touch base with all of them. I'll hit the entire west coast, will move my way into Arizona, Dallas, and I have to go up into Washington, LA. It'll be the full week for me out on the road."
