Apparently in today's first fully padded practice the safeties were god awful. One said safety getting benched. More than a couple 50+ yard plays on the defense during 11 on 11 (first team). Julian love (my favorite player in 2016 class) MUST play either safety. He is a ball player. Good, not great but good at everything. No weakness in his game. Constantly around the ball, and smart as a whip. Sure tackler most importantly. By temple, #LoveToSafety needs to happen!

listening to a couple of guys today on the college sports nation channel on Sirius xm radio talk about our irish. one of them thinks that our offense can be great this year but our defense improving greatly over last season will be the difference in the team winning 8 or 9 games this season. I'll agree that the defense will have a big say in how good this team can be

First full practice in pads and the defense still giving up huge plays. Adams with a 50 yrd run and big plays in the passing game to Brown and Armstrong. They have a lot of work to do to be respectable in a month. Elko has had all spring and summer. Balis too. Here we are month from the first game and the defense is still a liability.

I'm the only one who didn't like the Elko hire. Runs up the gut will kill us all year. Power run team like Georgia scares me to death

Not sure I like him or not. Wake is not a talent power house and from a stats perspective did well. I'd say Kelly probably knew he had to find someone top notch so I'm keeping the faith.

For the most storied program of all time, would have been nice to push some benjamins out and get the D.C. From LSU. But let's see. It's day 1 in pads.

First padded practice. Lighten up Francis!

Are we already in fire Elko mode after 1 full contact practice?

Earlier in the week people were crucifying one of the defensive players after the first practice in shorts.

Go out and get a hobby that will make you feel actually happy other than being an armchair and keyboard coach.

I did not like his style and how his defense performed against Louisville and Clemson. Now before you say look at who they had at qb. The running backs for both teams did almost all the damage. Huge runs right up the gut play after play. Now we see in practice huge runs up the gut. His defense is simply weak against the power run game.

BVG looked like the second coming his first 3 months on the job until the FSU game. Things aren't always what they appear at first, other times they are.

This is a fickle sport with fickle 18-22 year olds, fickle coaches, and a very fickle NCAA. Thank god I don't coach in it.

one thread on the uw coach , I guess the implication is we should have hired that coach. one day of practice Elko sucks, and the D scheme stinks because Wake lost to Clemson and Louisville. One day of practice shows how bad the coach is. Kelly sucks see uw post. Posters are delusional and unrealistic. This team is going to better than last years team the D will be better. take it one day at a time. and realize we will never ever get the uw coach, we are not wake and have better talent than Wake. No D scheme is perfect. Kelly seems to have adjusted. Wait and see

As a said. I knew people would take the bait and say "of course they lost it was Louisville and Clemson!" Watch the games and how they beat Wake. I prefer a 3-4 run stopping defense first and foremost. Elko D is not a run stopper.

Actually Kelly was positive about the D-line (feels there is a 'real line of scrimmage' now.) Remember, they are playing against one of the top five offensive lines in the country! And they have the right coach there now in Elston (Gilmore was a disaster and guys took steps backwards under him.) Elston is the real deal. Once Morgan takes control and the coaches figure out who will play safety (Chase, please!) we will get better up the middle.

The Irish D is flawed but the talent level is far superior to Wake. The D will be improved over the ole D we had last year. I will trust Elko over your opinion

I'm sure glad we have an expert like you around. You really seem to know everything about everything.

Regardless of who the defensive coordinator is, ND hasn't recruited the the top level talent in the numbers needed at the DE/DL position over the last several years. Elko, good or bad, will have to play the hand he is dealt. Nick Saban lost at home to LA Monroe his first year at AL. He recruited the talent to win. Talent is critical, but that is stating the obvious. We can only hope that Elko can maximize the performance of the talent on the team and recruit to improve the talent. It is what it is guys. GA will be an ultimate test. GA strength (ground game) versus ND weakness (DL). First up - Temple. They are completely focused on ND. After a 4-8 season, the Irish can't afford to overlook anyone. Go Irish!

Keep in mind Elko can't play for the players . His cupboard is thin on the interior Dline. The previous DC couldn't recruit ... give Elko time . Schemes are only as good as the talent. My concern is depth on the interior line. Depth is young . IMO the offense need to utilize it's strengths to run 90 plays per game and keep the defense off the field . No excuse on that side of the ball. Nick Chubb can't be us I is watching from the sideline.

Lol 3-4 only works with a big guy in the middle...the one position ND consistently cannot get. A 4 man line give ND the best chance to succeed with the players on the roster

Wake gave up 34 points to Louisville in the 4rth Q when the De got exhausted because the O was three and out for the first three Qs - certainly Elko's fault. Clemson gashed them for a long run in Q1, but other than that the numbers were pretty respectable for the team that won the NC.

You guys sitting on your couch I am sure are much better D Coordinators and recruiters than anyone at ND.

One still needs the bodies to play the positions then they need to be developed. BVG did not develop the players and S&C sucked.

Cage jarron jones ewell. D Hayes screams 3-4 olb as well

God forbid someone haves an opinion on a coaching hire. Get in line! Don't question god emporer Swarbrick's hires!

SIDE NOTE: I hope I'm wrong and Elko is everything we hope. Just don't like the scheme against the run. Very feast or famine in my humble opinion

Of course you're entitled to your opinion. I feel like you're overreacting just a hair.

You picked two games to question his abilities, one being against the National Champions. And, bear in mind, he was coaching 2 and 3-stars at Wake. Any given year the Clemsons of the world will beat up on the Wake Forests of the world.

On a more positive note, they held Florida State to 123 yards and the season average for FSU was 202.

Too many posters get all caught up over practices. If the defense stops the offense, people worry that our offense isn't any good. Conversely, if the offense moves the ball rather well they complain about the defensive scheme or personnel.

What the hell did you expect -- for the defense to pitch a shut out?

And, did you read the other article out there that Niles went off on the defense about fighters on the field, and then went out and dominated the offense later in practice???

You need to lighten up a bit -- now, if this is happening in week 5-6, a much different story. But my God -- it is -- as you stated -- THE 1ST PRACTICE IN PADS!

I did not see in Elko's resume that he was a magician or wizard of any kind...Geez, the guy had one off season with some kids. I expect improvement this season but they will not be a dominant D from what they were last year.

Here you go (the ones already complaining about ND's defense after 1 day of practice in pads) -- maybe this will help soothe your anxiety!

"Notre Dame's defense had a rough start to the day in the team's first full-padded practice of the fall. The offense moved the ball well early, but the defense rebounded and had a strong finish to the day.

Led by senior linebacker Nyles Morgan the defense had its most aggressive and active open practice in years. Morgan and the Irish defenders made a lot of plays during the practice, especially at the end."

Led by senior Mike linebacker Nyles Morgan, though, the defense under first-year coordinator Mike Elko regrouped in that last half hour with a vengeance, consistently recording three-and-out series against the Wimbush-led offense, although sophomore backup Ian Book also participated in three series.

I did love how his D played against FSU. Valid point

Okay bud. Same goes for you. And 99.99% of the population. Any opinion you have I will make sure that you are reminded that you are not a coach so it is an invalid opinion. What a joke

Lol. Ok buddy. Compare that to Nix, Tuitt, Moore, Okwara.... The last time we were successful with a 3-4. Point closed.
Isaac Rochelle was clearly out of position should have been a 3-4 end. Yes you make my point. Last time we were successful was when we ran a 3-4.... because we cannot recruit big tall rangy d ends.

BK today- "For the first time in several years our defense is a little ahead of our offense" Really hope I'm wrong about the D. Rooting like hell for Elko to be great
