VERY interesting QB situation developing at ND.
Matt Fortuna has tweeted that Kelly is talking about Wimbush packages in the gameplan. That's a really big deal. If you have your QB, then he is the man. That tells us that Kizer has some issues, and it's clear what they are. Footwork, footwork footwork. I was at the game Saturday and it felt like EVERY pass Kizer threw into the flat was off target or in the dirt. I don't recall him making an accurate throw once on a bread-and-butter play in the ND offense. His downfield throws were mostly great. So clearly he is not moving his feet and rotating to make the out throws. He has to get better at that, and I think he will.
Wimbush in the gameplan is clearly in response to his amazing athletic ability. Did you see that throw to I think Fuller (I think, watched it live) that got reversed? How do you out throw Fuller on a 60 yard bomb??? Also, Wimbush might be faster than Fuller as well! This guy is amazing. I also imagine he is just absorbing the offense now that he's 1 play away. Pretty good motivation. In spring and summer, I was hearing all kinds of talk that Wimbush might even be the #2 coming into the season. Probably just too much to learn for a true frosh. I have a feeling Wimbush will be called on to win a game at some point this season.
Next year will be very interesting, and I worry we may lose someone to transfer. For anyone watching the Showtime series (and if you aren't you are totally missing out), in the locker room after Zaire's injury, Kelly states definitively to Zaire's mom that this is Zaire's team, and he will be the starter when he comes back next year. Pretty strong statement. Seems to eliminate any QB controversy for next year. However, what do you do if Kizer takes us to the Playoff? What do you do if Wimbush makes that proverbial "leap"? If Zaire isn't the QB, does he leave? Are the other guys willing to step back when clearly both could start at most Power 5 schools?
These are awesome problems to have. Another sign of the quality program Kelly has built. I'll go out on a limb here and say ANY top coach in the country would be sprinting to get to ND should Kelly ever make a jump to the pros. I hope he stays and finishes what he has started with 1 or more championships. We're good enough right now.
