Kareem Takes Home MVP Honors
The standouts of the Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl was the East squad defensive line, most notably Khalid Kareem, Caleb Roddy, Ron Johnson Jr. and Kobe Jones. Throughout the week at practices, the defensive line made things difficult for the East offense but now facing the West, they looked even more dominant.

Kareem stole the show scoring on a 14 yard fumble recovery for a touchdown in the 2nd quarter and then followed with an 80 yard fumble recovery in the 3rd that led to another Eat touchdown.

The Notre Dame commit, ranked No. 281 in the Scout 300, is a big, physical rush end with size and mobility. He's very to block and showed a high motor, active hands and was a deserving choice as game MVP.

This was the second tier HS bowl - the big stars will play on January 9.

Soooooooo....out of the 100,000's of high school OL that played what only 5 are any good????????? That's what you imply by saying only one group of All Stars are the "best". Sorry.......makes no sense.

I TRUST IN BK!!!!!!

Back to the OP, really excited to see this kid on the field in a ND uniform, sooner the better. Hope Ara is right and that he proves too good to keep off the field his freshman year. He sure looked impressive at the all star game, and first impression is he is exactly the kind of talent we need at that positions going forward.

He frequently makes no sense.

Not really sure why everyone is bashing and calling this guy names.....Does anyone really think the talent level at the Semper Fidelis Game has anywhere near the talent level that the Army All American game will have??

the kid can play. Decent size with athleticism. You need that as a starting point. Then in addition he has a good attitude and character.

I think he'll end up being a good one to have in Blue & Gold. Hopefully we can get some situational play out of him this year like Kolin Hill a couple years ago and then he can grow into a bigger role.

Hey Tex - How are you ?

I am fingers crossed on Kareem and Hayes being DE's only . I think the staff can work with what they have for DT's w Tillery , Cage , Hayes and Taylor As has been mentioned a thousand times we have to get a high level pass rush from the DE position . It appears that Hayes and Kareem are the ticket .

Watching Hayes flatten a OT then destroy the RB was impressive on film . I think we are close on defensive recruiting lots and lots of four stars at every position

When you look at the 2016 roster I see only 4 DE's (Rochell, Trumbetti, Bonner, and Blankenship). Kareem appears ready for the next level and the odds are good that we'll need him.
And in my opinion Rochelle and Bonner are really better suited for the DT/3 technique position than DE. It's tough to ask a true freshman to come in and make an immediate impact at the D-line position, but the good thing is Hayes and Kareem early enrolled, so they should be better prepared. My guess is that at the very least we'll see those two in 3rd and long situations.

Kelly, think and hope you are right about both Hayes and Kareem. Of course, I thought Bonner was going to give us a rush presence this past season, and could not have been more wrong. Shaking Down the .... Is right, bonner is more suited for DT, especially with all the weight he added. Often times think the 320 plus lbs on a ND defensive lineman looks a hell of a lot different than the same weight on other top tier teams.

Just like Holtz did w Melvin Dansby I think Kelly has to do the same w Hayes ( moving an LB to DL ) . Given our woes rushing the QB and w Romeo and Day leaving ND has to get production from it's best athletes/players at DE even if it means playing an outside LB at that position.

In fact I will go a step further I think ND in isolated situations should start doing that at both LB and DL and that is taking fast athletes and converting them from DB's to outside LB's see Tranquill and training LB's to become DE's - see Hayes . Speed at those positions is almost as critical as speed at the offensive skill positions .- see Jaylon Smith

Any secondary recruit who has the ability to get to 225 lbs and does not have great instincts in coverage I would convert to an OLB - same goes for over sized OLB's if their not good in coverage I would convert them to play with their hand on the ground - see Ishaq Williams .

Speed Kills !!

Been a long time advocate for the importance of speed on defense, especially at the college game. Speed over size (225 lb OLB vs. 240 lb) can create problems for the defense, especially against elite offensive teams. Would prefer size and speed which Alabama has in spades for example, but will take speed if a choice has to be made. Tranquill is an interesting example. He fits the definition of speed over size for OLB, but not at all sure we have to make this choice, as I think we have both in our young linebacking group. On the other hand, Would love to see Hayes play DE, even if he maxes out around 265lb, as his quickness and speed with added strength could be special. BVG has some interesting pieces to solve our problems on defense, and it will be interesting to see if he is able to make scheme adjustments to take advantage of same.

Therein lies the problem D-coordinators have today. With most teams running spread offenses, we are seeing more 225 LBs for more speed, but they tend to struggle as they get overwhelmed taking on power run/pro style offenses such as Bama, Stanford, and MSU. You wish every LB could be of the Jaylon Smith mold, in which he can be 245 and be even faster than some 225 pound LBs.
