I'd like to get everyone's views on what Kelly does very well and where he comes up short. I know there are countless threads arguing about how Kelly is as a coach, but I think the idea of naming at least one good thing and one bad thing might reveal some common ground.
I think Kelly's best strength is his overall program management. He puts together a good staff, recruits with goals in mind, made important administrative changes and is pushing for more around academics. A college head coach has to be half GM and half head coach. I think Kelly is the perfect GM for ND. When people say ND can't get anyone better, I suspect they're talking about this aspect of the job.
I think his biggest failing is in QB development. Between Crist, Hendrix, and Kiel he got next to no productivity. Crist and Hendrix clearly got worse as time went by. He also tried to make Rees a gun slinger and couldn't get him to limit turnovers and play as a game manager.
As a bonus, the biggest surprise is how good he is at getting the team ready for big road games and bowl games (with one huge exception).
