I know, I know I'm beating a dead horse but...

BVG

I was reading that ND is sending just three grads to the combine this year.

Last year we sent 10! (It would have been 11 if Elmer wanted to go pro!) Only OSU had more with 14. That is a great number for a team that struggles to get in the top ten in recruiting every year. Shows that Kelly can develop talent. And explains the drop off in the 2016 season.

I really felt, even after our QB went down, we had the horses to be a final 4 team in 2015 -- hell, we had Clemson on the ropes at their place. But it was our inconsistent and disappointing defense that kept letting us down (Stanford!).

I do think Elko is the answer. If Long is too, and if Wimbush is all we hope him to be it could be a fun season (it does seem to be the toughest schedule in a long time though.) Still Kelly must win 10 (okay maybe 9) AND THE bowl game.

Those combine-invite stats got me thinking of the year that could have been... and the mistake of sticking with BVG in 2016.

i was thinking about it recently, what is a realistic expectation for the '17 season? Now I know all message board fans will say "we have the talent to win 10+ games". But how many times does a team go from 4-8 to 10-2 in 1 year? Especially starting a brand new QB? After the 3-9 debacle in '07 we only were about .500 the next year.

Two words, Brian Kelly. Can he or can't he. I offer there's enough talent. Lookin at you coach.

9-4. Loss in a bowl game.

Can Kelly go from 3-9 to 10-2? Not sure.

But it is doable. Just look at Ara's 1964 team. The 1963 team went 2-7. In 1964 Ara had a new QB (Huarte), really changed things up on both offense and defense ... and was 9-0 going into the USC game (we should have won!).

Of course Kelly is not Parseghian, but it just goes to show that a team CAN go from lousy to good in one year with the right coaching and players.

I want to see this years team play pissed off, a chip on their shoulder, nasty. I don't give a rats ass about the jumping up and down on the sideline, I want to see it on the field. I'll probably get the "this is ND, were above that" crap. We'll, maybe the team should be fed a daily dose of the nightmare that was last year. Play hungry, throttle down man. During the NC game the Clemson QB was hit late. There was mention of Saban sending a message. I understand they lost, but time for ND to play pissed. When both teams have talent, it's who wants it more. I miss the street fight that was ND-Miami in the late 80's early 90's. They can start with sending UGA a message. It's your house Irish, protect it. Time to play like someone punched your mother.

I think BVG's problem was that the young players wasted to much time asking silly questions.

The question is not can the team under Kelly go from 4 wins to 10 -- -- of course it can.

Will it? Maybe. Remember Kelly is a handicap.

So it comes down to talent.

The real question is can this team or any team under Kelly reach the next level? By that I mean win against top teams and win the big game

That question has a sure fire answer. No Kelly can't.

We will always suck and underachieve with Kelly

So if we get lucky and win 10 games this year. Know we will lose the bowl game and still be a second tier team

Without Kelly we win the super bowl and go to see Trump

i like our chance of turning in a good season. my opinion is the schedule is manageable, with 4 toss up games.so i could see 9 or 10 realistic wins. now that said we must play sound inspired football. hopefully kelly and the players play that way. we have the talent to compete with anyone ,except the likes of Bama & OSU on most saturday.

See Auburn football from 2012 to 2013. From 3-9, with a complete coaching overhaul, to 12-1, with their only loss coming in the BCS championship game. And yes they did it with a first year starting quarterback.

And just to let you know that history (maybe even destiny) is on our side, the defensive coordinator fired from the 2012 team was none other than BVG.

C'mon, you gotta believe...

BVG just was not an ND appropriare college coach. His defense required total time commitment and film study. Our guys can't give that. Pin your ears back and be athletic is a better defensive philosophy for us. Not frozen going through your reads.
