This is not a knock on Kelly. I will take him over anyone since Lou.

It appears Kelly, Weis and MANY coaches have difficulty understanding the mind of a 20 year old and are not effective communicators.

Examples - Double D under Weis, Gunnar Kiel and Golson under Kelly. Sure, these kids may have left anyway, double D may have been a head case, but I feel there is a major disconnect in handling these young men.

Is it difficult? Of course. But they should do better. Kelly fancies himself an educator as did Weis. there are countless examples -- cheating scandal, and I recognize tis is a very difficult and challenging thing to master. I think some coaches could have done better, that's all.

I know many will disagree. And that is reasonable. My opinion on this is clearly one that can be defended or attacked.

I am more concerned about Gunnar Kiel than I am about Golson. And who cares about Double D? Kiel should have stayed. He would have played big time. But he was not coddled. In this day and age, unfortunately, each player has hot buttons and Parcells was a master at figuring that out. Many would say Leahy did not give a damn, but the opposite is true. He was a hard ass, but a master at motivating his team.

Lou, same. Some of the biggest hard ass coaches were genius motivators under the radar. Lombardi.

Coaching is tough.

Why do you think Demetrius Jones was a head case? He was highly recruited. Many Illinois prep sports media guys claimed he was the best QB out of Illinois since Chuck Long. What CW did to Demetrius at the G Tech game was criminal IMHO. You can look back in hindsight and point fingers at Demetrius and his post ND problems, but CW gave Demetrius no chance to succeed during that Tech game. To be honest, I'm not even sure why CW recruited the lad. Perhaps he used DJ as a road to other Chicago area recruits. Who knows. Demetrius has said that leaving ND was one of the biggest mistakes of his life. How many other ND transfers openly admit that?

Ski......yet Brady & Jimmy stayed for Weis.....and Rees.....and so far Malik...under BK. My guess is EG "collapsed" mentally at socal and BK saw/knew it......finally forcing him to play MZ vs lsu. EG had to stay in the spring to graduate and might have really been 50/50 on staying....BUT then saw that Sanford & MZ were a perfect match. All we need now is a storybook ending---for MZ!!

I give Dd credit for admitting that I did not know he admitted that. the reason I said he was a head case is because he did not show up for the bus to UM that is not cool. That is head case stuff cannot argue with that

I think you are on to something with EG having a mental collapse EG is a player who thrives on confidence and his was eroded big time over those last 6 games shame I will always like EG I am just hugely disappointed because I thought he was the next ND Heisman winner

It was a mistake made by a very embarrassed and disappointed youngster. The build up to the G Tech game was huge for DJ. He had a large contingent of family and friends at the game. CW spent all of two weeks prepping Demetrius for the option. The kid was yanked at halftime due in large part to the impotent planning of CW for this game. I don't blame DJ. I blame Charlie. Demetrius knew he was keeping the position warm for Jimmy. The Tech game sealed his fate. DJ knows and admits that he should have asked CW for a position switch. Lessons we all learn with maturity. No matter how you look at it, Demetrius needs to get on that bus with his brothers.

Leading a football team revolves around honest and direct communication. Unfortunately honesty delivered in a direct manner can be perceived as harsh. This generation of kids are often coddled and get their feelings hurt when the wind blows in the wrong direction.

I've often told kids they'll be given every opportunity to win a job and then when they don't win the job - they quit, they transfer, they complain to mom and dad and they make excuses.

It's part of the territory for 2015 and it's an issue from Pop Warner to the NFL

well said I have never been a fan of Charlie I think he is a bombast prick. Sure he does things for charity and he did some recruiting for ND but I do not care for the guy and I think he is vastly over rated, even as an O coordinator Anyway, I bumped into DD's cousin in 2006 at a shoe store on miracle mile in Chi on my way to the ND-UM game (the one where Brady threw so hard to Carlson it bounced up and the DE ran it in) -- and he said Dd was sooo excited about enrolling in ND. Sad it did not turn out right for the kid I fault Weis too

DD had talent and could have been a help somewhere

Kelly does have a problem communicating. I said it on here before. If you watch the first 6 games, the way Kelly and Golson interacted was 180 degrees out from the way he dealt with Golson after game 6. It was noted by the game announcers that Kelly seemed to be calmer and he wasn't purple in the face. But everything changed when Kelly started blowing up on the sidelines. Golson's production dropped as Kelly's temperature rose. A coach has to know a player's personality in order to know how to correct that player. MZ seemed to be able to handle Kelly's in-your-face style of coaching better. At least so far he does.

Disagree about Kelly's handling of EG this past season. Yes, Kelly was much calmer and much more patient with EG, and in my opinion, more than he should have been. We all saw several instances of EG walking away while Kelly was talking to him, and generally pouting whenever he made a mistake. The other players saw this as well, and that is disruptive to team chemistry. The QB is the leader on the field, and the team needs to know the leader will get his ass chewed when he screws up, just like everyone else.

That is ridiculous. Golson started to thrown the ball to the other team and carry it like it wasn't a valuable peice of property. After his strong start he began to read all the great stuff written about him and got careless. After adversity struck he lost confidence and things snowballed.
Blame Kelly for not pulling him soon enough but his crappy play wall on himself.

I've watched Coach Kelly communicate with his quarterbacks for six years in 65 games. "The starting quarterback must take care of the ball and make good field decisions." I've watched Ara kick the grass and pound that rolled up game plan in his hand for years, Lou would pick grass and grab face mask to make his point, and Coach Kelly turns purple and demands accountability from players and coaches. In the locker room after the USC game he told the team to take a hard look inside themselves and this would not happen again. They got the message and won the game against LSU. Even a quarter blind guy like me can see that Coach Kelly does communicate with his quarterbacks and team.

Everett Golson left ND because Coach Kelly communicated to him a clear message, you will compete for the starting position this fall. You may win the job, but if Malik wins the job then he will start. You will play a role this fall regardless but I'll not naming a stater before this fall. Golson left the team because it was his decision. He chose to tap out of the competition now.

I can understand it because he has one season left to prove himself to the NFL. You can't do that playing platoon football. He turned the ball over 22 times last season. He has to show the NFL that he's not a turnover machine. You can't do that from the bench. He must show his leadership and confidence this fall in game situations. The USC game must not happen again with his new team. Sometimes it's better to start over but only time will tell. Good luck Everett.

Great post.

These kids can't take any chances re playing in the NFL ..... EG wanted his last yr to be a showcase for his talent. Good luck to him and thanks for bringing it in some big games.

On to MK and his back ups

Golson is leaving ND because he did not get into a Graduate Program

Someone mentioned that and the reply appears others have had academic issues and have been admitted to Grad program. To me this is only scenario I'd be satisfied with. To take the narrative of Golsen taking his ball and going home is troubling for his future. A reason too the grad thing makes sense is that it appears he didn't have a school destination finalized before announcing he was leaving. That too is troublesome.

Actually, I think Golson already has enough of a body of work that he could've platooned this year, and still been sufficiently evaluated by NFL scouts. Look at Cassell from USC a few years ago, who never played at all and yet made it to the NFL.

I think Golson's making a mistake, because he'll have to learn a whole new playbook this summer, and he already knew ours. Remember it took him awhile to learn our playbook in the first place (that was supposedly an issue in his development).

I don't think Everett Golson has what it takes to play in the NFL.

Football coaches messaging has not changed but the way the modern athlete receives the message has changed.

HS Football and all the 7 on 7 tournaments, All Star Games, Nationally televised games and Rivals and Scout rankings has created some entitled narcissistic players.

Brian Kelly strikes me as guy who doesn't mince words or sugar coat things and that will not mesh with every "modern" player.

So be it, recruit as many quality players and people you can find and coach the crap out of them and you live with the results.

EG is unorthodox,, the way he holds the ball, moves around all the time, his size, none of which matter if his team is winning but glare and get on your nerves if he is not getting the job done. Micro Manager HCBK has not had a QB who meets his fictionalized perfection expectations but with MZ that may not matter because the bull will not let the pressure get to him, will play his game, lead the team and just WIN ! GO IRISH !!!
