K. Russell

I guess cause he got suspended, the NCAA doesn't look at it, as a redshirt year? If that's the case I think the NCAA is out of line here. Russell was suspended by ND, not the NCAA. So what does it matter how and when Russell took a year off? He stayed in school and did what he needed to do to be academically eligible to go to school and play football.

Mormons can leave for a 2 year mission and come back without having sacrificed any years of eligibility.

It makes no sense to me. You have 5 years to play 4. What is you just took a year off from school? The only reason if behind academically which I believe is not the case. Way too complicated. Also the NCAA will take how long to issue a decision?

KeiVarae Russell would have to appeal the NCAA in order to return in 2016. Those words spoken by Coach Kelly some 15 minutes ago could mean K. Russell is done at Notre Dame. I wouldn't trust the NCAA after last summer. He can't afford staying here and possibly being refused a fifth year of eligibility by the NCAA. Thank you son now go prove yourself in the NFL.
This is a tough call for him. I'm not convinced he would even be drafted. Take your chances with the NCAA or with the draft. At this point I think he would be a low draft pick at best. I hope he has a really good agent and counsel. I do wish him the best which ever way.

This is odd. Julius Jones had to sit out 1 year in 2002 after playing in 1999, 2000 and 2001. He was declared academically ineligible. He came back in 2003.

I do not see why it would be a problem for him to come back for a fifth year - five years to play four. He has already been cleared by the NCAA to come back so, why would they have to clear him again to play his fourth year year within a five-year span? Something does not sound right about this deal.

Likely some rule addresses the various scenarios and used to prevent abuses. If players could take off a year with no worries, wouldn't take for boosters to arrange no show jobs to keep the players instead of having a player red-shirt using a scholarship spot.

the only way he wouldn't be drafted is if he wasn't healthy and even then some team would likely take a shot on him. a healthy russell would tear it up at the combine and be a likely 2nd rounder at worst.

I disagree. The way he played this season, he is a late round draft pic.

Not sure I agree. I'm sure if healthy he'd test well, and I'm also sure some team would take a shot on potential and 2012/13 tape vs what they see on 2015 tape, but I think he top two rounds and maybe a 3rd are off the table. Too much 2015 tape of mediocre to overcome. Not sure how the rules work but he'd do himself a solid by coming back and learning to play the position better. He got by on raw talent this year with little to no technique until the last few games this year.

disagree. players with his skill set are rare.

Cliched and I'd almost argue they are closer to a dime a dozen at CB then rare. Truth is somewhere in the middle but there were probably 15 cbs in last years draft that posted a 4.4 40 and a 32+ vert. If there are 15 this year, his 2015 tape puts him in the back 5 of those, which puts him well out of the top 2 rounds.

nfl draft scout is a highly regarded service and even with the injury he is listed as the #74 player in the 2016 draft. a 2nd or 3rd rounder by their projections. highly doubt he lasts through the 3rd.
