kind of a psychological set up for mediocre football? Not trying to flame; hear me out...
If you are the kind of mature, intelligent young man with great perspective, isn't it implicit that your priorities are putting football on the back-burner in a way? To me that mentality is saying, hey, I have a great opportunity to play quality football at a prestigious, historic program, prepare for my future with a rigorous, world-class education. If I'm one of the few lucky enough to make it to the pros, so be it.
As opposed to the kid from a rough background, with not a great deal of academic ability, who sees the next four years of his life as his only way out of poverty/violence/etc. The kid who knows he has 48 games or "auditions" to secure a future. The kid with a violent sense of urgency on the playing field and in the weight room.
I'm no shrink, but am curious if that might be a subtle psychology that this program might have. I understand this is Notre Dame's greatest selling point, but maybe an ironic source of limitation?
Not trying to dismiss the sacrifices these guys have to make, and I'm proud of all of them. Just wondering if this could account for that lack of killer mentality on the field
