ND is the only program in the top 20 without a single recruit from its home state. 23 players from Indiana were ranked in the ESPN top 300. How does Kelly miss what is right under his nose? On Monday while Kelly was holding a press conf to say what a bad job he did last season Harbaugh was out at a recruits sisters swim meet and Saban was helicoptering in to visit recruits in Florida.

Its a new day at ND. Kelly obviously targeted a lot of out of state guys. Its time to move forward. Screw Harbaugh, Meyer and Saban. Its time to produce on the field. The recruits will take notice if they see a turnaround.

I believe he is complacent. Lou Holtz said that was the biggest problem he had before he left. Why urban meyer and nick saban continue to have success because they are not satisfied

I won't sit here and bash Kelly, considering the turnout on NSD. The fact players like Yeast, The Qb going to Clemson name escapes me, Losing Werner and Kirkland the LB from a cycle ago going to Tennessee. That's some real talent that should not be leaving Indiana. I get that possibly some guys may not be fits in certain situations. IMO i think those are the guys you fight tooth and nail for, local kids. I think the top player in Indiana, if a fit positionally or character wise should take precident over say a player from Ca.

I think Kelly does a fine job recruiting. His coaching needs to improve though, as even he admitted this week.

Maybe the high schools in Indiana don't produce enough recruits with academic resumes that meet ND's standards.

Another part of the country where ND really has disappeared in recruiting is the Pacific Northwest. It seems to me they used always get important guys out of Oregon and Washington; now nothing.

Chase from B.C. - the best part of the Pacific Northwest!

Texas is one state ND always did well recruiting. Texas is loaded with talent and if I'm ND I try to get at least 2 to 3 players from there a year.

Well, they were able to find a "ACE" (according to Polian) from Hawaii, not exactly the Pac NW, but close. I have no idea if he's an"'ACE" or not, but if you listen to Polian, he absolutely thinks ND found a gem.

When were they ever getting mad stacks of talent from the Pacific NW?

ND has had great success with Indiana players throughout the years. Indiana HS recruits has been escaping the home universities for years (ND, Purdue, IU). This is not a new phenomenon. It happens in basketball and baseball too. Boys and girls. I'm not a recruiting expert by any means, but IMHO, I would think that ND should own the state of Indiana and signing elite players from the state should be a priority. I don't even know if ND reruits the Chicago Catholic and Public leagues anymore. We've had top talent leave the state way before BK arrived.

I live in Texas and yes loaded every year. You will like The TE and I see there will be a real effort to land more next year. Go Irish.

How could he get a top 20 class and be called lazy? I would call him lazy if he only focused on Indiana and didn't get out to all the other talent rich states?

Maybe no one in Indiana was interested because they hear more about the negativity here than a kid from Florida or Texas?

UDub and Wassu both trending up big time may have something to do with that.

He would be lazy if we signed all the top kids from Indiana and had a class ranked #50, which is what would happen if we were overly focused on Indiana. Also, you have to remember, lots of kids in Indiana grow up in IU and Purdue centric families that are, at best, ambivalent about ND, and at worst, ND haters. That does have an effect.

Its easy when the thread starter doesn't t care for the coach and will always look for an opportunity to be critical.

The whole conversation is without merit. We have three or four players from Indiana on the roster, and this year's circumstances were such that we are fortunate to have signed the recruits we did; and yet we paid a pretty steep price with the five highly ranked players who de-committed. I think Kelly works tirelessly on behalf of ND, and to suggest he is lazy as evidenced by lack of Indiana recruits in this crazy year is disingenuous at best.

I don't recall ND ever really getting players from Oregon.

You have no idea what the word disingenuous means. When the top player in your home state is stolen by Louisville and is at a position you have 0 recruits it comes down to ignorance or laziness. ND should have locked up this kid years ago.

Living here in Illinois l will tell you this...The talent level here is magnificent..ND does recruit here but NORTHWESTERN has done a great job of landing kids..Fitz knows literally every HS coach in the area and is on these kids early..

This thread is really stupid . Kelly works very hard and did a great job updating and improving coaching staff and then signing a number 12 class getting six good recruits on the last couple of days
Coaches don't always control what happens in their program . Player suspensions cheating and poor grades as well as injuries hurt us the last few years

I hope he gets really lazy this year. Can we please tell him to stop working with QB's and not worry about the offense at all. Better yet, could you just please stand on the sideline and do you best Bowden from his last couple years at FSU.

Wouldnt it have been easier to fire him? Oh right Jack gave him a 6 year extension.

Recruiting hasn't been Kelly's main problem; player development and coaching has been. Hopefully both problems have been addressed in the off-season hires.
