I would estimate that less than 10 percent of the 120 quarterbacks recruited by NCAA Division I schools per year could be considered a reliable serviceable starters. I would also venture that less then 5% of those 120 quarterbacks per year could be considered elite college starter with even less being NFL caliber. In the Coach Kelly era, the only 5-star quarterbacks recruited so far did not work out and both transferred. Tommy Reese a 3-star was coached up, but would have fallen far short of being considered a reliable serviceable starter. Golson another 3-star quarterback has always been on edge of being one of those top 10 quarterbacks, however turnovers, reading defenses and knowledge of the playbook has hindered his development.
The future at Notre Dame looks bright with Zaire and Wimbush in the fold, however to date Brian Kelly and staff have failed at developing a reliable serviceable starter. The talent seems to have been recruited, but 3 of 4 quarterbacks have obviously thought they would be better elsewhere. So I question if we are recruiting the right talent for the system or is this a development issue or both?
