Interesting Article on Defense

Regardless of the amount of time under Ryan, I believe Van Gorder is a follower of or believer in Ryan's defensive principles. As Greegael replied, the points made by Polian are eerily familiar. Not necessarily a criticism, but the challenges are apparent until the system is mastered by many at some level.

“I remember asking one of the Jets’ coaches during the offseason, ‘How in God’s name can you put Jimmy Leonhard on the field?’ He said, ‘No one else can translate the defense, no one else can get everybody lined up.’”

Ladies and Gents that is why Joe Schmidt is on the field. And believe me in todays modern game of multiple formations and multiple personnel groups. If you don't think getting lined up correctly is crucial, then I'm afraid you do not understand football, Now, the question of the defense being too complex is another question. BVG has been a Defensive Coordinator for the Falcons, Georgia, Auburn and ND. I do not think he is a disciple of anyone, I believe he runs his own system.

No argument but similarities and influences from past associations may be evident to a discerning eye.My vision isn't all that great but I'm ready to be educated on the subject

I don't think many (any?) of us lacked understanding of why Joe plays. Before he was injured last year he was brains AND could play / move laterally as well. Regardless of his lack of ability to move post injury he plays for those obvious reasons, but it does beg the question at what point does it fall on the coaches when a better player with less knowledge can't be coached on the defense? It is ultimately their job to teach it and to constantly be told he's the only one that can line a guy up becomes an indictment on them not the kids at the end of us day.

Schmidt was a captain last year, right? I think him being in the game had more to do with not upsetting the apple cart rather than his ability to line up the defense.

I do think the defense is too complicated though; evidenced by the lack of fundamentals and numerous blown assignments.
