(IMO) Assignment football. Easy said, not easy done.
Every play..
1- Hit the dive back at the line. Sounds simple, most defenses don't!
2- DE hit the QB hard "every" play on the option, CB takes pitch man. DE "Must" make QB distribute the ball every play and punish the position. (Especially with the two option QBs we play)
3- DLine backfield penetration will disrupt the option (no open lanes/no option). Most option fumbles are caused from simple DLine penetration.
4- Defending cut blocks: Hands to the head and shoulders pushing blocker to the ground on cut blocks to keep blocks off knees and legs... This is technique and can be taught in practice. Problem, most defensive players allow cut blocks to hit their thighs and are rolled out of the play.
5- Backside must stay home.
ND has the defensive speed on the field to close the option.
1. Grace and Schmidt in the middle on the dive.
2. Smith and Morgan or DE outside hitting QB every play...
3. Russell and Luke hit the option backs.
4. Mix in Redf blitz. Long day for the option.
ND Wins both option games with basic option strategy and ball/clock control.
