------ Do not exclude position coach that could be the next great D coach-----

Two names I'll throw out: Derek Mason, current HC at Vanderbilt; former DC at Stanford. May be out of a job after the season.

Chuck Martin, current HC at Miami of Ohio; former assistant at ND; former DC for Kelly at Grand Valley.

I don"t think BVG will be let go. Too close to BK. But I do think it will soon not matter how many pts. ND puts up if the Defense gives up 50. Doing the same stuff over and over and expecting a different out come is you no what

I say go after the real uncle Rico, he's got some high school experience--probably still tending llamas and selling tupper ware somewhere in rural Idaho with the napster, Kip and lafonda

Moot point. BVG is going nowhere. He is Kelly's hand picked guy. I would like Mike Tressel from OSU. CO D co. with Sciano. Coaches LB's at MSU. Would be a sweet hire.

Hopefully someone who runs a 3-4. 1. Copy the best (Alabama) 2. We have 3-4 personnel anyway imo. Young guys such as D. Hayes is the perfect OLB in 3-4. Khalid Kareem looking heavy can be a great 3-4 end.

well, he could help his cause by aggressively recruiting. Get out there and do whatever it takes for however long it takes to get DL prospects.

Van Gorder used to be a house painter. On his application to ND he said he could teach spackling. Kelly must have misread that.

With all due respect the key to Alabama's defense is not the fact they play a 3-4 Over Under Scheme. The key to Alabama's defense is Alabama's players.

Find the best salesman around because I've just realized it's all about recruiting, the coaching part is irrelevant.

If they fire him mid-season, I'd promote someone from the staff. Because you can't change the defense during the season.

Now afterwards, we should go after some hot young DC from another program, like how Harbaugh hired away the Boston College DC this year.

BVG is done after this year for sure . His stats are just too bad to be rehired . I love Chick Martin but I am sure there are others like the defensive or head coach of BC

I'd try to get the Stanford D coordinator to come to ND. Stanford's D is pretty dam good every year and sure as hell has been better than our D the last 3 years.

Their personnel is not as talented as ours but every year their D puts up better numbers than ND.

Or how about the Wisc. D coordinator or Temples ? Or the head coach currently at Vandy (Mason) after he gets fired - when he was at Stanford he was a very good D coordinator. We need a college D coordinator - not some guy from the pros.

If Temple or Wisc had our Athletic talent on Offense they'd be a top 5 program.

There would be a lot of very good candidates to choose from - a new D coordinator who is very good would love to come to ND and coach the talent we have on D ( top 20 type recruiting talent) - its a win win for any new D coordinator - he comes in and if he can get the D to hold teams to less than 30 pts a game he is a hero ! Anything under 30 a game at ND and he is the second coming of buddy ryan or wade Phillips.

The current scenario is the best one possible for a new D coordinator - coming in now when the D has been so lousy for the last 3 years - the new D coordinator cant do any worse.

There would be a lot of very good ones to hire.

Whether ND plays a 3-4 or 4-3 is not the issue, in my opinion. Each requires a different profile of player, and not sure we have the players to go back to the 3-4. Recall how we kept hearing that BVG needed a different profile for his scheme, and that was used as the basis for the difficult transition. In year three, that no longer can be an acceptable excuse for the poor defensive play.

I was all for firing BVG last year, and when that didn't happen, I reluctantly bought into Kelly's statements that we NOW have the right players for BVG's scheme, and that they have learned his complicated system, etc... Was cautiously optimistic, and then Texas kicked our defensive butts.

Expected big games from Tillery and Jones and Trumbetti and Hayes and Cage, and we sure didn't get it. The 3-3-5 alignment made no sense to me given the opponent, and I think this contributed to this, but thought these guys played way below expectations regardless. Stops at the line of scrimmage and tackles for a loss gets the defense pumped, and the 3-3-5 alignment produced little to nothing in this regard. We saw some TFL's and QB hurries with the four man front, and our guys started showing some emotion and fire, and then we abandoned this and went back to the 3-3-5 when we had the lead. Just think BVG over thinks the game and our defense looks slow and confused and ineffective as a result. I'm all for starting anew, and just wish there was a way to effect the change today, rather than waiting for the season's end.
