I think Kelly has passed the point of no return. Not because of the 4-8 record this year. If that was the only issue, he would be back next year.
The problem is that, within the past week, there have been two different stories about Kelly looking for greener pastures elsewhere. I happen to think they are true. But more importantly, opposing coaches will raise this to every single recruit Kelly might see. It's not hard to predict that they will ask a recruit how they might commit to ND when the head coach is himself looking to leave. It's a huge problem for Kelly, and one that I don't believe he can survive.

I agree. I truly don't think the wins/losses would have cost him his job but i don't see how ND can retain him at this point.

I'm not giddy about the candidates being mentioned here. Hopefully, ND can pull that big fish that has been swirling around ND circles for 15 years. Otherwise, these ND message boards will be identical to the last 15-20 years of misery in 3-5 years.

Curious? If JS fired Kelly, would he or other staff be able to reach out to recruits? As to keep them informed of the ongoing search. Or at least give them comfort that they will be in good hands?

One could say he created a mess...but...
He's the mess and our admin didn't care enough and now the snowflake has turned into an avalanche.

BTW, the day Kelly is dismissed we are talking 3 years minimum until we could contend. So for every season they make us sit through..it's at least another three years from a new hire coach.

Please dismiss already. at this point I would allow anyone with a pulse no matter the level experience.

BK has become cancerous.

Its really sad it has that ole Ty feeling to it, as to how he left the cupboards bare. Recruiting wise i agree he will not rebound i truly feel they need to cut there losses. Hopefully we get a steal if it does happen. At least a competent coach.

I saw the USA Today article alluding to Kelly's agent/reps talking to USC last year. What was the other story that surfaced?

Usually the AD keeps an assistant coach or two around for the transition until the new coaching staff passes the NCAA tests that are required before they can recruit for their new school. Those holdovers keep contact with the recruits.

Agree '78 Kelly's fishing expeditions are what trouble me most. Also, Kelly just seemed 'done' this year. No fire or excitement. That said, whoever comes back has the senior/junor talent to go 9-3 or better next year. This year's lineup was chock full of Freshman and Sophomores at key positions - secondary, wide receiver and an o- line decimated by graduating three blue chippers (we all know that lines take time to come together and damn did we miss Martin!.) That doesn't excuse our awful special teams play, Kelly reckless play calling vs. NCSt, and 4th quarter flops. But whoever coaches this team next year will have a seasoned O-line, the best returning backfield in a long time, Senior/Junior LBs, WRs who showed great promise and just need to mature, (remember we lost 5 including Alize!) and a secondary that is the most promising/athletic since Holtz days. QB is a question mark but QB was a question mark in 2012.... Not saying we have Manti talent but we have solid talent.

So whoever is the coach will have higher expectations for this fan than I brought to this year. (With all the graduations I hoped for 9-3 and expected 8-4, BVG was a disaster, Kelly didn't coach up to his abilities and although we were competitive in all games, damn, what a disappointment...

I just hope we avoid a Ty, CW or Davie or Faust hire! (Kelly is/was a much better coach than any of them (and I feel the program is on a much better footing these day.)

We need some fire! (And a little defense!)

Agree on all fronts. Need a coach who can just put together solid game plans and get the team to execute w/out all the mental errors.

I'd be interested if you would tell us what the two different stories had to say. Better yet, any links? Thanks.

It's not like ND is keeping him around because his players are being such wonderful students and citizens. Every freaking year under Kelly we have multiple issues of suspensions, arrests and academic impropriety. Tell me you don't dread the month of August? It's every dang year that we lose players within a month of season.

So, now we have reports that basically every year he's tried to either get out of town or leverage himself for more pay. How does anyone in charge evaluate Kelly and think he should be retained?

Terrible on the field decisions: check
Players getting in trouble off the field:check
Prospecting coninuously for the next opportunity:check
Acting like a complete buffoon on the sideline:check
Any kind of loyalty to Notre Dame: negative

If you fire the head coach, you generally do not fire the staff. That's up to the new coach to decide. So the assistants can keep the same level of contact with recruits that they would normally have, provided that the assistant hasn't chosen to leave on his own. I think it would be unusual for anyone in administration to be in contact with un-signed recruits, but I can't say there's anything illegal about it. Someone may know the NCAA rules better than I.

Well good insight from one of the few all time - long time, ND positive supporters. Yes there are many ND supporters on this board but credit IGuess to 78 for always staying positive to a fault like a ND good news Nazi who will call others out

Now 78 here is the thing. Don't you think this Krlly looking around thing is the strangest thing ? I don't understand --
1 is this an agreed upon strategy between Kelly and Jack?
2. If not then Kelly has been caught red handed and Jack should can him immediately, yes?
3 if Jack does not move on this he is a complete loser and has put the program in jeopardy
4 I sent a letter to Father Jenkins about this for whatever that is worth. At least I did something other than bitch on this board
5 last how come the media is not covering this in a big way? I mean ND looks foolish and they love to bash us and this is their chance
6 I cannot see the team wanting to play for this guy. Untenable is the perfect description

I think some of the inaction could be based on the credibility of these 2 media stories. "Unnamed sources" or "according to reports" or whatever don't constitute actual verified facts. Especially since one of the sources is Yahoo, which has zero credibility IMO. They're like a half step up from The National Enquirer.

Although my name does not show it I am an ND grad. I am told that ND (Jack) and Brian would each love to part ways, and the easiest and cheapest way for that t be accomplished is for Kelly to find a new job. Firing him will cost ND too much money and him quitting will cost him too much money, but if he finds another job, a sweat deal can be worked out.

I happen to believe that the reports are true, but even if they are not true, the damage is done. The idea that Kelly is looking to leave ND is out for public consumption. Other coaches will use this against Kelly as a sword, and it is really going to compromise our recruiting.

Saw something on Facebook (I know) from "Notre Dame Fighting Irish on 247Sports" that said something to the effect that ND would be willing to negotiate an exit with Kelly -- as his name was linked to Oregon.

Unfortunately, I cannot get a link to paste in here, so, I will not validate the validity of the Facebook post.

I read the same post on FB and the source 24/7 was using was FootballScoop.com.

Kelly to Philly in 2012 was enough for me. Team unprepared to play yet he was prepared to interview. Send him packing and get Barry Alvarez or Lou in for a year until we find a coach.

What worries me most is the status of our quarterbacks. IMO, it's the most important position on the team. If either Kizer, Zaire, or Wimbush were to decide to quit, transfer, or go pro (because of Jack's refusal to fire Kelly), things will probably get worse. If this scenario were to happen, it could open the floodgates to desertion.

You are aware that Zaire has already announced he will transfer, right?

Really, Barry Alvarez and/or Lou? At least come up with some logical thoughts.

Wow! I honestly didn't know that. I haven't paid much attention to changes to the team roster lately. BTW, I have an idea. Since you're also an alum, have you thought about writing a letter to Fr. John about Kelly's future?

Well, at least be glad we are not in Rutgers position -- they lost THREE -- yes, THREE QB's in 1 week due to a transfer. Now, granted, it is Rutgers -- and BTW, it was pretty much a forgone conclusion during the season that MZ would seek to transfer upon graduation in December. He has no business sticking around. I think the Wimbush era is about to commence (I see DK leaving for the NFL -- hell, strike while the iron is hot!).

Kelly is NOT better than any of those. He might be a little better recruiter than Ty but that's it.

I'm not sure the Brian Kelly you are thinking of but the Brian Kelly I know is so out of touch with the immediate goings ons that you just gave to wonder did he stop giving a **** once he got paid?
