Hunter Johnson commits to Tennessee

Wow, Butch stole an incredible talent right under Kellys nose.

Must be that SEC pull. UT will be good and soon.

Well, he is a 2017 qb. He has lots of time to change his mind. If Tennessee struggles this year and ND does well, he may very well change his mind. Last year this kid named Wimbush had decided on Penn St. Then...

It's all about the system. Great, NFL hopeful QB's don't want any part of the rinky dink Kelly offense. God I hate this coach.

Anybody know where ND looks next for a '17 QB?

We go after Sean Clifford. He is a Ohio qb that is currently committed to Penn State. He wanted to come to ND but knew we were all in for Hunter. We stole Winbush from Penn State. We stole Will Fuller from Penn State. Now it is time to steal Clifford.

If I'm a QB, I'm not too excited a out having Zaire as a soph, Kizer as a freshman and Wimbush as a freshman in front of me. Simple business decision.

^ UT has high rated QB commits. The constant idea that competition deters commits: see USC for that contradiction.

Tenn also has good young QB's in last couple of classes. Plus they are the favorite to land Trevor Lawrence. He is the #1 QB and overall recruit in the '18 class. I highly doubt our current QB's scared Hunter Johnson away. It just sounds like Jones and company truly made him a priority and Johnson was very comfortable with the staff. That's not saying that Sanford didn't work really hard on this one. Hope it is not over. Hunter sounds like the kinda kid you can build around.

You're so cool Bodi. Please over react more

Over react? You are the one that called Hunter a big loss when he wasn't ours to begin with and there is 17 months to signing day.
I answered a posters question on what qb we go after next for 2017 which is probably Sean Clifford who is also a highly ranked QB.
I just try to even out you "doom and gloomers" with some reality.

Bodi, there are sooo many freaking drama queens on this site it is amazing. Both ND fans and trolls.
The kid is a 2017. He has over 20 months until he signs. Butch could well be on the hot seat by December this year when they are 6-6 again.
Oh, and he threw 3 INTs in his first game. At this rate he will have more turnovers in his first 4 games than Golson had all on last season. All while playing in HS.
Once again, ND will find a very good 2017 kid, and they already got a very underrated 2016 guy.

It's August, 2015. The kid won't set foot on a college field for at least 17 months. This is not a big loss. As Wimbush changed his mind and ended up at ND, others will do the same in 2017. Be patient.

By the ways Turnover, OSU just won an NC with a similar quarterback to Malik and Wimbush. They beat Oregon for that title - again a team with a duel threat qb.

sorry hoosier storm but jones didn't steal hunter from under Kelly's nose as hunter's dad and family are big UT fans. our irish have Wimbush for four or five years so they'll be fine in south bend

but, nevertheless ND was "all -in" with Hunter; till now it was him or him! ^ so Kelly did not agree with you!

but, yup to the rest! the pro style QB's do not see ND as a fit; even the influence of Sanford could not overcome that stigma. If Sanford demonstrates an offensive scheme that is more favorable to such QBs then maybe ND can get some interest from them.

Hunter was the ND top choice of QB for 2016 and 2017 cycle. He would have set the table skill position wise for that class and paved the way for something special. Sure he can change his mind and sure ND will probably get another QB that is likely very good. Nonetheless this is disappointing

Everyone said the sky was falling when Barnett went a different direction too. Despite the wailing and gnashing of teeth on the message boards, we picked up a stud named Wimbush in the end. He fits BK's offense and has a very bright future. Barnett might end up being great at 'Bama, but I am happy with Wimbush. Win/win.

The same thing can happen this year. ND has 24+ games to play before Hunter will have truly make up his mind. Lots can happen (transfers, suspensions, other commit).

So you spoke to Johnson today and he told you that ND has a stigma re QB's and for that reason he is going to UT - is that correct

You know this first hand correct ?

Not all that familiar with Hinter's game, but most of us have clamored for the athletic QB that can hurt you with his arm and his legs, and most of us are excited that Kelly finally has a QB and Back ups that fit his style of play. I was frankly surprised we were all in on this kid for this reason. When I read it was too close to call between us and Tenn, I just assumed a Tenn commit was in the making.

before you decide what that style you think is Kelly's style offense is you ought to look into the offense that Kelly ran for a time before ND. Several times posters claim - wait till Kelly gets his QB- but they really have no clue what/who that QB is. Just a shot from the hip. Look over the QB's under Kelly.

Historically, Gunner was the type Kelly would have to run his offense. He had the mobility to extend plays and the arm to hit WR's anywhere on the field. The threat to run was real, but really a threat to run.
HJ was similar in style. Kelly does not run/ has not run the Oregon offense.

Then there is that fact that ONLY HJ was considered, and the only QB being recruited. That ought to tell you who/what is envisioned as the Kelly QB.
And, with Sanford bringing influence HJ was clearly the guy they thought was the fit for where they were going with the offensive design.

Lastly and most disturbing is the word from HJ after committing. He stated he has been recruiting for UT for some time now. I read also, just a post, that another site stated that Kelly has been very confident HJ was ND's. If so, then this whole recruiting effort was very mis-read.

Now likely ND will pursue the McCaffery kid, who at this point is not offered, and if he gets a Stanford offer is a strong lean there.

ND had all the eggs in the HJ basket.

This trend of getting commitments before they've played a game as a junior in high school is nuts. Texas was one of the first programs to go in this direction and it contributed to Mack Brown losing his job.

The difference being that Mack would fill up 80% of a recruiting class with guys that would end up being 3*s and marginal 4*s and then he would be scrambling to try to get in on late bloomers and big time guys who had developed over the last year and a half.

Perse, Kelly has stated multiple times that the college game has changed dramatically in recent years to place more emphasis on a dual threat QB, and he has adjusted the offense accordingly. Golson couldn't run the read option, but if he could, we would have seen much more running out of the QB position. I agree, HJ would have fit nicely into the Kelly offense of ten years ago, just expressed my surprise that he was our top candidate, given our offensive direction. As stated, I'm not very familiar with HJ other that what I have read, and that he is the prototype pocket pro style QB, and not one to extend plays with his legs; and certainly not one to run the read option. Regardless, Kelly obviously loves his talent and upside and was all in and willing to adjust the offense to take advantage of this kids talent. Enough said.

Tex -

If ND has the kind of year I think they will I see an uptick on the recruiting front . I had a thought last nite and it was confirmed in an article I read this morning that ND will need to continue to throw the football in order to keep and attract big time TE's and wideouts in the future . This 3 yds and a cloud of field turf is nonsense . I totally get having to be able to run the ball in obvious run situations but moving the ball up the field we should see a healthy mix of passing and running for a ton of reasons ,not the least of which will be to attract prime time QB TE WR talent in to the program and obviously to keep defenses off balance .

Just listened to Mike Frank's Power Hour and he mentioned B. Wimbush as one of the major reasons why H. Johnson elected to go to UT.
I will put his(Mike Frank) reputation as far as recruiting with anyone who covers ND.

Not questioning Frank but Tennessee has 4 QBs between last years class and this years that were/are top 250 prospects who were also top 8 in their position rankings. Its not like the path to success is any better there. Besides if Wimbush burns his shirt this year Johnson will have two years to wait max before he is in position to take the reins.
