im just curious to see how many more years Kelly will coach Notre Dame. I am not suggesting he be fired or anything like that. I'm just wondering with all the vigors of being the Irish coach, how much longer can he go? Also if he does leave within the next few years, who would you like to see as the next coach? I mean a realistic person to coach. Sabah and Meyer will never coach at ND. Anyway, just wondering on a lazy hot Father's Day.

I believe that BK will leave when he wants to leave. It appears that he is bound and determined to win a title at ND and have his name along side with Rockne, Leahy, Ara, Devine, Lou. You never know what you got until it's gone. You want realistic? Tommy Clements. Fantasy coaches are all tied up with huge bonuses and contracts with buyouts that are ridiculous.

I give Kelly 2 more years before he bolts to the SEC or the NFL. He just doesn't doesn't fit with ND.

Ara, perfectly stated and in full agreement.

Disagree-----next 10-11 win season he leaves for NFL IMO.

Dan Mullen IMO would be agreat fit at ND-----no clue if he would leave Miss State.

Notre Dames next coach won't be a square peg in a round hole, will need a be a coach who knows the culture and still succeed, that eliminates about 90% of everyone's fantasy coaches.

Good responses. Thank you all. My thoughts are that he is here only another year maybe two. I think he is a bit frustrated with how his tenure has gone. He really hasn't had the exact team he's been trying to put together since he's been here. This upcoming season is probably as close to the team he has wanted on the field since he's been at ND. Who knows how things might have gone had Golson played two years ago instead of sitting out. Or how last year might have gone if the " five" had been able to play. All guesses I know, but you kind of wonder. Even this year with 19 returning starters, His veteran QB decides to leave. Zaire appears to have all the tools, but he is inexperienced. This needs to be the year for Kelly. Another 8 and 4 won't cut it. At the very least the Irish need to be in the conversation still at Thanksgiving time. I generally like Kelly. I just think he has had some bad luck with certain players. On the other hand he has lost some games they had no business losing. As far as the next possible coach, I have no clue. However, I do think someone young, who is a head coach with a track record of winning would be my template for a new coach. Anyway, it's only June and I am already looking foward to the new season. Let's hope it's a good one.Go Irish!

Gotta go with TDIrish1 - Even before reading his reply, I was thinking Dan Mullen. Mullen wanted the Penn St. job when Paterno left. He has done a tremendous job at a perennial SEC bottom feeder. He will throw the ball, but loves to pound it too. He's young and would leave MState in a heartbeat to go to ND - IMHO.

I think Coach Kelly is a perfect fit for ND. He's an excellent coach who values his players working in the classroom, on the field, and in the community. He gets along well with the media and knows how to work a crowd. He's a tireless recruiter and administrator. He has a plan on how to rebuild the ND Program. He's already stated that he isn't a lifer coach. I expect he'll stay at ND until he turns 60 and then retire to enjoy his wife and family. I know many expect him to bolt for the NFL sometime in the near future. I don't share that belief. I believe him when he stated that he's a college football coach. That's the thing he wanted to know when he talked with the Eagles. He's at his dream job and works for pennies compared to the coaches at the other blue blood universities. Even Kentucky pays their coach three times what ND pays Coach Kelly. The Irish fan in him knows it will take two national titles to separate him from Coach Holtz and Coach Devine.
Lol

Values players in the classroom? ND players have been caught cheating and/or flunking out.

You people are living in never never land. He'll take the first NFL job offered just like he would have in 2012. Now, to find an insanely stupid NFL GM.

"...He really hasn't had the exact team he's been trying to put together since he's been here...."

riiiiiight! and unless he wins the NC it will always be 'those darned kids"

OK, here's your chance---who would you replace Kelly with?

To be honest, I think Charlie Strong, Bret Bielema, and a few others would be good hires for ND. And no I wouldn't judge Charlie on the team he brings from Texas this year. This being only his second year, and Mack didn't do any favors at skill positions before he left.

I'm not a huge fan of Bielema, but I do like Charlie Strong. But whether or not either of them would be a "good hire," do you think either is an upgrade from Brain Kelly?

I do believe Bret is. However he requires his system to work. And that system is run first, run second, pass when you have to. And it takes a couple years to get the bodies, and the recruits, and the training he needs. So you could see a 3-9 type season depending on what is in the cupboards when he arrives. Charlie I think is a sound defensive mind, and with the right OC, and the right talent can be deadly. He kept Louisville going after Bobby, and IMO improved them. Seeing what he does in Texas in the next couple years will decide. But he was a pretty good guy and did well in his last stint at ND from 95-98 as a D-line coach.

Mega dittos! BK is a Winner.......and is driven to win an NC at ND....IMO. With the talent and coaching he has both 2015 & 2016 are prime seasons to get it done. After that I could see him going NFL.....or staying for another......or retiring. In any case BK will have shown the path for the next HC to continue on. Plus ND's investments & changes in athletic policy will make the job more attractive to many guys......like Sanford!

Charlie Strong is making $5 million a year plus perks at Texas. No idea what his buy out is. The only ND gets Strong is if Texas fires him.

Bielma also making huge dollars at Arkansas.

I will say this though------any guy who looks like him and has a wife who looks like that must have great recruiting skills.

There's a lot of truth in this post.

Kelly sticks around for 4-5 more years. By then, Chuck Martin will have 5-6 years of FBS head coaching experience and could be ready to make the jump. Martin was 74-7 following Kelly at GVST, I think he could have similar success at ND.

Mullen interviewed for the PSU job and didn't make the cut. Was told he came across as an egotistical inventor of the game.

I think Greg Schiano could be a possible fit. High intensity, academic oriented, and spiritual guy who took a lowly Rutgers from nowhere to somewhere.

I could never see Chuck Martin as the HC at ND personally. He would have to win at a high level at a better conference first.

Schiano-------never-----not a coincidence he hasn't been hired since his demise at Tampa Bay.

^ neither of those guys WILL EVER be HC @ ND

question:

if ND goes 8-4 in '15 what will your "updated" view of the Kelly tenure be?
Will your expectations for the following seasons be less optimistic?

Lol

Ok so let's see....I will take some of that because that means we have a coach willing to get the player on that edge to come to a place that makes ZERO academic exceptions for anyone and anything . It's pretty impressive to be honest that ND stands by its standards no matter the damaging inflicting self punishment it presents. Do you really believe most other schools would have even missed a beat let alone suspend and consider possible win stripping? No way!!!!

MD will not go 8-5 in 2015 and whoever said Bret Bulimia (so) was an upgrade is nuts. Kelly will be at ND until he wins a NC and possibly after just the first.

Living in Houston... Today everyone started reporting that Herman to Texas is already a done deal. And now at the end of the day the same local sources are stating that back door negotiations have already started with strong and LSU.

Again just a for what it's worth.

I think Bielima would be a great pick.
