Trevor Janicke’s third-period goal broke a 1-1 tie and No. 9/8 Notre Dame completed a weekend sweep of No. 2/2 Michigan, 2-1, Saturday on Senior Night at Compton Family Ice Arena in South Bend, Ind.
The Irish (25-9-0, 17-7-0 Big Ten) head into a best-of-3 Big Ten Tournament quarterfinal Friday night on a five-game winning streak and winners of eight of their last nine. The third-seeded Irish host No. 6 seed Wisconsin (9-22-3, 6-17-1).
Game two is next Saturday night, with an “if necessary” game 3 set for Sunday, March 6 if the teams split the first two games.
League champ Minnesota earns a bye into the March 12 semifinals. No. 2 Michigan (25-9-1, 16-8-0) hosts seventh seed Michigan State, while No. 4 Ohio State gets fifth seed Penn State in Columbus, Ohio.
Janicke’s game-winner came with 3:08 left in regulation. Spencer Stastney and Nick Leivermann assisted.
Hunter Strand gave ND its first lead, 1-0, at the 7:12 mark of the second period. Michigan tied it up at the 6:11 mark of the third period on a power-play goal by Matty Beniers.
Matthew Galajda amassed 31 saves for the Irish.
