And where was Romeo all day (until the 4th?)? I'm disappointed with the pass rush... Are we playing it a little safe because we don't have a solid middle (I love Schmidt and it is clear he is the head of this defense but he isn't Manti - who is?) Still waiting on Redfield (although the pick and hit in the 4th quarter was promising.)

This D will need to pick it up against the next few weaker offenses (because Stanford is for real.)

Any chance Grace can help Schmidt out in the middle?

Tex?

I rewatched the first half and he's yet to blitz. They put him im a 3 point stance and then drop him out in coverage. He's rushed the QB a few times but I don't recall seeing it in the last few games.

I think one reason is they want him in pass coverage because he's a great athlete. He's been great beating blocks and tackling the ballcarrier on screen passes. Makes sense to me.

pretty sure against Texas, although he may have lined up as a DE on that 1. I'm not sure w/ a LB as athletic and fast as he is you want to be blitzing alot. I remember the days of Fox/Calabrese trying to cover the middle of the field and it was brutal to watch. Thats where he can help us most i think.

Jaylon has blitzed this year, but for the most part we have not blitzed very much at all.

Nah. Fox and Calabrese were actually quite good in pass coverage.

Agree on Jaylon. Just because he's athletic, doesn't mean he can pass rush although blitzing is slightly different. I like the idea of blitzing Schmidt so the better athlete can cover receivers, beat blocks, and still possibly make a play on the QB if he escapes.

Notre Dame blitzes quite a bit actually. They didn't blitz much vs. teams like Navy and GT, but I think that's a pretty sound strategy considering the nature of those offenses.

no, those two weren't very good period. unfortunately they were the best nd had at the time.

He blitzed at least twice in the USC game. I watched it quickly tonight and I believe in the first third down by USC he blitzed and at least one other time I noticed it. There was likely another time or two.

Nah. Maybe in 2013 they weren't as good, but up until that point, I argued pretty heavily in favor of them. Guess we'll have to agree to disagree.

I'm not sure I'd give Max too much credit for the pick - it rebounded up in the air and was a reasonably easy INT. I too have been so hopeful for him to come around and become a consistent beast this year. Saw a few positive signs and maybe that pick helps his confidence.

It was the same for me on KR - that long pass where he got beat had me frustrated just because so much was expected of him. But he finished strong and his pick was absolutely perfect. As BK said after the game, he finally attacked the ball in the air. I'm hopeful both of them use that to elevate their games the rest of the season.
