Hard not to atleast respect Gerry Faust

I know that I'm getting old when I see a thread like this. Faust was a joke IMHO! He should have stayed in high school.

He was a great high school coach. He was not a good college coach. He had a couple nice wins at ND, but didn't quite measure up. With that said, he absolutely loved Notre Dame , the kids he coached and everything the university stood for. If there was ever a coach that was a perfect fit on paper, it was Faust. He simply didn't win.

Faust did not leave voluntarily. He was pushed out. More revisionist history from the OP.

Can you cite your evidence please? I'm open to learning something new and not afraid to say I was wrong.

If you were following ND back in 1985, it was common knowledge that Faust was shown the door. He wanted to stay and was in tears at his final press conference as I recall. Faust resigned on November 26, 1985. Holtz's introductory press conference at ND was on November 27, 1985. You can connect the dots.

People say it was nice for him to step down....... I wasn't around back in '85.... but I would view that as someone who is either a quitter and doesn't believe in themselves.... or they were forced to resign aka they were fired but on good terms.

Kelly doesn't win either. Unless wins against UMass, Wake Forest, Syracuse, and Army get you off.

I have never heard of anyone who didn't respect Faust. A great man thrust into a job he just was not ready for. But he did not resign voluntarily. His five years of consistent mediocrity were up.

I have a brother (ND class of 1983) who still resents Faust to this very day.

He may resent him because of what happened to the football program during his time as a student at ND, but does he disrespect him as a man? I doubt it. On that topic, imagine being in the class of 2005. That would have been brutal.

One year of Davie and three of Willingham---barf.

Yeah, even that 2002 team that had a pretty good record was doing it with mirrors. Winning games without scoring a TD on offense.

Yep, I remember it well. It all came crashing down after the Florida State game that year.

I wasn't talking about Kelly. This was only about Faust. So I don't know why you would even mention Kelly. But for the record I am not a Kelly supporter.

so sit down and shut up instead of opening your pie hole about things you know squat about.

His record at Akron showed he was not a good college HC. But the man loved ND and truly put all he had into trying to be a top HC. And he has been an ambassador in many ways for ND since then.

A very good man who just was not suited to be a college HC.

After years of Devine's straight power football, in which a counter play was about as exciting as it got, ND fans were drooling all over themselves when Faust came because his teams went through about six shifts before they snapped the ball. When they beat an average LSU team to start the season, ND fans were beside themselves. Then they played Michigan and it was an absolute slaughter (and ND had like 17 starters back from the team that barely lost to Georgia in the Sugar Bowl) and you could plainly see he was a high school coach.

But to his credit, Faust tried to adjust his second season, but he just didn't have what it took.

I believe we moved to #1 after that LSU win.

HDK , you are absolutely correct. I remember wher he was hired his teams won many State championships at Moeller high in Ohio. Everyone was excited. The LSU home opener was electric as everyone thought they would be unbeatable. Then when they went to Michigan, it was all over. I remember Anthony Carter having a big game for the wolverines. As you said he was in over his head.
