OSU definitely wouldn’t have been in, and PSU most likely out too.

I’m curious what others think but it seems like it would’ve been Texas vs Oregon and ND vs. UGA. In that scenario, I think ND plays Oregon for the NC.

to the small percentage of detractors of the I think you point to the fact OSU (probably the best team) wouldn’t have been in had the playoffs not been expanded.

I’ve heard a lot of people in the past argue there aren’t even 4 teams good enough to play for a NC let alone 8-12.

Every year is different. This year there is no 2001 Miami, 1999 Florida State, 2019 LSU, 2020 Bama, 2022 Georgia, etc. There may have been only one other team in the whole country that could challenge them and I think a playoff would have been pointless in those years. But this year, no one is particularly dominant. There are no undefeated teams. All the conference champs lost in the quarterfinals. This is a great year to have the playoffs.

However, I understand the argument that 12 teams is too many and maybe even 4 is too many some years. A lot of playoff games have been lopsided, which is not fun to watch. The frustration is you can't just change the playoff format based on who you think are legit contenders.

Had we had major bowls...

Rose. Oregon vs Ohio State
Sugar. Georgia vs ND
Cotton. Winner of Texas-SMU [SWC] vs Penn State
Fiesta. Tenn v. SWC Loser
Orange. ASU v. Penn State

If this was a 4 team years ND doesn’t make it. They finished 3rd on the coaches and AP polls but 5th in the playoff rankings.

The think the feeling was they wouldn’t run back to back rematches and ND would have jumped them if was only 4 teams but they didn’t need to go there with the current format

Oregon, Georgia, Penn State, and Texas would have been the committee’s choices IMO, in that order.

If Las Vegas chooses the teams, Ohio State would have been the 1 seed before the playoff started despite losing at home to Michigan in game 12, according to Dan Patrick from Fox radio.

I listened to Dan Patrick on the radio on Friday talk at length why Las Vegas should be selecting and seeding the 12 playoff teams. He made some good points.

Notre Dame would have been left out of the 4 team playoff. The 12 team system should be either 8 or 16 teams, with no byes. The teams should be seeded just like NCAA basketball. The higher ranked teams get their reward via first round home game against the lower seeded opponents. But, everybody plays the same number of games in the playoff until they are eliminated. Byes should not exist.

Different criteria in the 4 game. This year's rankings not relevant.
