His interception against Miami of Ohio has been my favorite play of the year. Looked like Lynch from the '66 team, or even a little like Butkus or Nitschke.

Greer Martini is most likely out for a month with a bad miniscus.
We will miss him for the USC game but my Tevon Coney will step up !
Who will spell Tevon? Jamir Jones? Jonathon Jones?
Go Irish ! Get better soon Greer!!! (we will need you for Navy--wish we had you for USC)
Irish Illustrated @PeteSampson_

The Irish could be down starting linebacker Greer Martini against USC. Details here.https://247sports.com/college/notre-dame/Article/Martini-questionable-for-USC-109066450 …
This will hurt the D

Kelly said he was day to day, but Kelly always seems to understate injuries. We will absolutely miss Greer for the USC game, but Coney will have a huge game in his absence.
Nope. With Kelly, you don't know what the injury really is how long the player will be out. Who knows, Martini's career may be over with.

This sucks. Greer was just getting it and starting to get the proper angles of pursuit and playing aggressive and under control.

Coney, while quicker, is out of control entirely way too much.

I don’t think coney is quicker than martini. Don’t think he’s better either. This is a blow to the defense. We had three lbs really working well situationally and now that’s been blown up. This will hurt.

What games have you been watching?

Don’t see the quicker thing that you guys are seeing. Why is martini in more for passing downs then? If coney was quicker, wouldn’t he be better in coverage? I’m not ragging on coney, I just don’t see what you’re saying. To say he’s “clearly quicker and better” is wrong, imo. Like I said, we had three lbs working really well together, doing what they do well, and now we’ve lost one. This is no knock on coney, I love him as a player, but he’s not clearly quicker or better than martini, up to date.

Coney undoubtedly has more linebacker skill than Greer (except for in pass derense which will be key this week vs USC's tight ends) but he's also by far the most like of the 3 linebackers to blow a gap assignment and allow leverage for a huge running lane for Ronald Jones to exploit. He's done it numerous times this year.

Thankfully, he's had all week to prepare as the lone starter at Buck so hopefully he's locked in even more than usual.

“Coney undoubtedly has more linebacker skill than Greer”

That’s ur opinion. They’re both skilled. It’s certainly not undoubtedly, IMO.

Fair enough. We can agree to disagree.

My opinion is that if Te'Von was as mentally focused as Greer when he was in the game, his skill level would set him apart substantially. Hell, as is, Martini is starter and a captain, yet Te'Von has been more productive in the run game. What In love about Martini is that he's always where he is supposed to be. Te'Von isn't, but he's getting better with it each time out and he hits like a kid that would start in the SEC.

I think he’s been more productive stat wise in the run game because that’s how they’re situationally using the both of them. They both have a better natural nose for the ball than Morgan does, IMO, but Morgan has taken a significant step forward this year. He’d been very average until this year, imo. Like I said, it was great to see the three of them play to their strengths so far and now we have to do w/o one of them. Hope it’s not for long and it doesn’t hurt too bad, but I’m concerned.

Martini is a little soft against the run for my liking. Guys get a lot of extra yards after initial contact by him. He's excellent in coverage though and understandsnpass defense concepts. He's a little bit like what I'm envisioning out of Jack Lamb, but I'm hoping for some more thump along with it.

Te'Von is frustrating at times when he makes a mental mistake and blows a run fit, but he hits you, you stop in your tracks. Te'Von's biggest issue is that he's a true Mike and should have the coverage responsibilities of a BUCK. It's not his strong suit. He'll almost certainly slide to Mike next year with Morgan graduating, which should prompt a Bilal move to Buck, where he best fits, because that dude IS NOT a Rover. Nowhere near the hips to play in space, IMO.

Josh Fatu USC's NT who has quite a bit sacks and TFL's is officially out of the ND game. So is Porter Gustin. Carr the fast freshman RB has not practiced.

ND'S Oline should control the line of scrimmage..

Not only is Fatu out, but his backup, 5 star freshman, Marlon Tuipolotu is also out (for the season) after back surgery. They're solid at DE, but thin in the middle if their DL. They have an excellent middle linebacker though and he helps out quite a bit.
