I know a lot of you like me are - or have been, big supporters of EG.
I was so high on this young guy. I expected greatness. A Heisman maybe.
But it came unglued. He would flirt with my support for him with dazzling feats like against Pitt in 2012.
He would disappoint like his disappearing act in 2013. He would hit Koyack or Daniels in the end zone to win against Stanford and MSU. He was damn good. He would put the ball on the ground like a Pop Warner kid for 6 games straight in 2014. He was damn bad.
Damn that he is leaving. Good that he is leaving.
It is the best for him and for ND. The only negative is we are a little thin. But he needed a change. And honestly, after the Spring game -- I was having visions of him getting passes knocked down this Fall. Maybe interceptions. maybe ball control issues. Maybe greatness. Maybe a benching. Too many maybes..
Whether accurate or not, I will always fault Kelly for making him play in the pocket. EG is a natural roll out guy. Some guys, like horses, are best when free to roam. He was like that. In the pocket he could be money --- or he could have passes knocked down or his vision downfield obscured resulting in an int. He needed to just be himself. But he was restrained.
His leaving is the best decision for a guy who deserves the best. He gave his all for ND. He made mistakes. He did not achieve what many thought he could. But I will take what he gave us.
Damn he is leaving. Damn he was good. Damn he was bad. Damn he will be missed. Good -- as in good luck EG.
