I think you are right, except the SEC plays a eight game conference schedule and leaves room for four tomato can games. They claim that's fair because the league games are so tough. With a ten game schedule yu0 only have two free games to schedule.

They’re starting to play a true non conference game . Alabama at Texas for example in 3 weeks . Georgia /Oregon , Texas A&M / Miami , LSU / Flor. St. , Florida / Utah , Auburn / Penn St ,
I thought the ND/UGA games in 2017 and 2019 were great for the sport. Although ND lost both, they were close and well-played. Would love to see us sign up for another home and home with UGA.
ND does have a home and home scheduled with A&M for 2024-2025.

I am curious about protected rivalries with 16 teams. How many per team? 0-3 are possible.
In a 16 team conference you would have a 3-6-6 system with 3 protected rivals and alternate playing 6 teams one year and 6 other teams the next year. That way you'd play every team in the conference every 2 years and every 4 year player would be able to visit every stadium in the conference.
