FYI: Hope this proposal works.

I can see it happening. NBC knows what they have with Notre Dame. Notre Dame can also shop their rights to CBS, Fox, even ESPN/ABC.

For so many reasons, this just screams of a leverage move. If anything, it just greases the path to the Big Ten.

1.) If Notre Dame succeeds, you will have a Civil War break out in the ACC. The Conference could even vote to dissolve with as few as eight votes. There goes your GOR. Why? Notre Dame would be making twice as much for their ACC Home games than would an ACC team when Notre Dame plays at the ACC stadium.

2.) NBC can’t even negotiate with the Big 12 for at least another year and a half unless ESPN and FOX gives them permission because of their exclusivity window. I doubt very much that will happen, almost to the point of it being nothing more than an intentional ruse to grease the way for the next possibility.

3.) If this move fails, which it probably will for the reasons mentioned above, Swarbrick can then say he tried, but the Big Ten money was too hard to pass up.

No. Just no.

This has zero impact on the ACC. If anything it keeps the ACC teams on NBC for the scheduling agreement which increases the ACC profile.

Notre Dame doesn't NEED the money. The athletic program doesn't bail out the rest of Notre Dame the way it does other schools, Notre Dame just wants to be in line with other top schools. When Notre Dame needed the crossroads project they just asked alumni and the half a billion was raised in two weeks. Not many schools can do that.

The ACC might melt down, but it will be if ESPN surs to get out of the contract to poach Clemson and another school. ESPN is driving this bus.

Amazing the rationale that fans of Big 10 schools will use to convince themselves that ND will be joining the conference.

So Notre Dame was so smart they leaked this story more than a year and a half before NBC can even give the Big 12 a call??? Come on. You guys are smarter than that.

From NBC’s perspective, this give FOX and ESPN all the leverage. Either Notre Dame is trying to stab NBC in the back or they are using this leak to intentionally misdirect the public from what is really going on behind the scenes.

In all honesty, it’s a move of genius if it gets the ACC (and Notre Dame) out of their strangulating GOR.

You’re right. “Notre Dame doesn’t NEED the money”. But schools like Florida State, Clemson, North Carolina, etc, etc, etc do. This would give Notre Dame an exponential monetary advantage over their ACC Conference mates.

Ask someone from North Carolina or Clemson why it might not be time to shop themselves to the Big Ten or SEC. And then tell them that this might be their ticket out. They only need 8 votes.

NBC knows how many viewers the ND broadcasts get, and they know how much advertisers are willing to spend to have their ads on during those games. I have a hard time believing if they could get $75 million now, they would've only took $15 million previously.

Yep. There’s just SO much fishy about this leak.

The potential Big 12 “shoulder programming” has just been sabotaged wrt NBC. And the other P-5 Conferences have either leverage, or baggage wrt “shoulder programming”.

NBC isn’t in any Universe going to pay Notre Dame $75 million for 6 or 7 stand alone, possibly meaningless games every year.

I don;t agree with 1 or 2 but 3) makes sense. And if the rump conferences want to talk behind the scenes they will talk.

I think ND had to float a $400 million bond to complete this project.

Well, if you agree that “3 makes sense”, then you almost have to agree that 2 is also true.

2 is contractual wrt the exclusivity window. This leak is like NBC playing chess with FOX and ESPN, and then letting FOX and ESPN make the first ten moves of the game wrt NBC’s desire for any Big 12 “shoulder programming”. NBC is prohibited from making any moves or contractual contact wrt the Big 12 for another year and a half (unless ESPN and FOX gives them permission).
