According to FB Schedules there are only 11 FBS coaches with winning % over 50% vs. the top 25:

11.) Brian Kelly - 51.35%

10.) Dabo Swinney - 51.43%

9.) Kevin Sumlin - 51.72%

8.) Chris Petersen - 51.85%

7.) Mark Richt - 52%

6.) Gary Patterson - 53.7%

5.) Jim Mora - 54.2%

4.) Jimbo Fisher - 62.9%

3.) Nick Saban - 64.6%

2.) David Shaw - 66.7%

1.) Urban Meyer - 71.4%

Just goes to show that vs. these guys anything can happen. :)

I say that the next time Jack has to hire a HC, go for it big. What's the use in settling? Take a couple of names from this list...Dabo, Urban, Patterson, Shaw and throw a ton of cabbage at them. Make an offer they can't refuse. If you are going to hire a HC, then hire a HC that is beyond proven. What's the harm in trying? Then, find money for assistants. The best assistants available. Perhaps some alums can help with that. Until then, ND has a coach. 2017 is no excuses and that includes a thin DL.

Re: Miami and Stanford. These numbers make those games look even more interesting.

Just so you know, this has already happened & didn't work.
We will take Urban for example. They did have an agreement with him. Flew out to SLC & met in person. Then he countered with something the AD couldn't do, which is allow him to get kids through admissions without meeting certain mandatory requirements.
No money in the world could change that.

I can give more examples of this, but Urban is the perfect one. Money isn't a factor in the coaching search at ND.

And ND didn't "settle" with Brian Kelly. If you go back to 2009 he was the hottest name in coaching. He won multiple titles at lower level football. Won in the MAC with a program that had been horrible. Then went 12-0 at Cincy & was one second away from playing for a national title..with Cincinatti. Lol.
He was "the guy" at the time.

Correct on all accounts.

There are different ways to run a scheme. One is to tell the players this is the scheme you will run..........one for offense and another for defense. Now go out and do it. That is what ND was doing last year.

Most of the coaches at the top of the list however, do it a different way. They look at the individual talents on the team and build a scheme using those talents to their best advantage. One of the consequences of that approach is that because the player personnel changes every year the scheme evolves in order to take advantage of new and different skill sets being added to the team. Coaches with teams that are always evolving are difficult to predict both offensively and defensively. (Meyer, Saban, Fisher, Swinney) Coaches that run things the same way they did in the past become old hat and predictable, again, both offensively and defensively. (Kelly)

Will the new coaches maximize the player's skill sets they have on the team this year? That remains to be seen. Are there enough highly skilled players on the team this year? We shall see.

I never once said ND settled by hiring BK. Coach Kelly was a hot commodity back then and most, if not all, Irish fans were pleased that he came to ND. If you don't want to go after the proven big fish in the pond, then settle for the successful second tier guys, whoever that may be. It's just my opinion on what Jack should do next time around, if even he's still around. I never said it would work. Never said the elite guys would come. It is just something to ponder. Other than Urban, what other big name top elite HC was offered and ended up with a counter proposal for ND to chew on? Can't act like a second tier program, afraid to approach the approachable, next time around. And yes, everyone has a price.

Again in the last 4 coaching searches what elite coaches showed even a passing interest in the job ? Urban did but wouldn't t take it given the parameters in place. Money isn't t going to change that.

This post is so inaccurate on so many levels it's laughable.

Believe it or not people not associated with the program talked to Stoops & he wasn't interested either.
Making 7 million with parameters you don't like is not better than making 6 million with free reign to these coaches.

So, let's treat ND as a level two job and reach for mediocrity. It doesn't hurt to ask. Otherwise, are there any quality MAC guys who might be interested? This discussion is all for fun anyway. We do have a HC. He made changes to save his job hopefully. Let's see what happens.

Kelly did what all coaches that have one foot out the door do............fire the OC and the DC and pray. Normally this is it, the last gasp.

ND is not only a top tier program, it is one of THE top tier programs. It's not like you can't win at ND. Kelly has gone undefeated in the regular season and won 10 games in another season. Stanford has been very successful and I believe they have high academic requirements. As far as coaches not showing an interest, how many times did Saban tell AL no? They kept adding money to the discussion and he agreed to be 'Bama's coach. It isn't ALL about the money but it's pretty close.

He didn't fire the OC.
And the DC had the worst 3 year stretch in program history. No brainier firing.

He just signed an extension.

If you are going to come to a ND board & post because FSU doesn't have a free board, at least get things straight.

I'm sorry but ND is no longer a top flight program. B-level now. You can't win big, consistently at ND. It's why ND can't get a big time coach like Bama or OSU do whenever they want.

Yeah Bama really had a string of Hall of Famers between Bryant and Saban.

This is probably the dumbest thing you have said, which is saying a lot.

Look at Bama the 10 years before Saban.
They were 64-51. (Which includes 3 seasons with 4 or less wins). If Saban doesn't fail in the NFL, where would they be?
If Urban doesn't have an affair with an assistant at Florida, have a mental breakdown, where would OSU be?

ND is still considered by all (not including idiots) a top tier program. Still top 10 recruiting classes, top TV ratings, top ticket prices, & most watched program in college sports.

And as far as winning games against good competition? Still one of a dozen teams with winning record against ranked opponents the last decade.

Patently untrue...as usual. Guess you kind of make stuff up as you go along. Pretty foolish.

Still waiting for you to sell your info and story to TMZ sports on the affair, since your the only person in the world with this incredible info.
