Not that the 100's of post about the subject are enough, I offer one question... Who do you think would put up the most PPG this year at Notre Dame given that they took every snap (only one Jask Sparrow).

I know I've seen a few board members say. "now Sanford has his man in Malik" or "Sanford wanted a true duel threat QB" Although I haven't read that in any articles, I kinda don't get that impression either while listening to his interviews. Personally, I think EG offers more than MZ from a QB standpoint, however, there is not doubt that MZ is more vocal on the field and plays with more heart.

and for the flamers, I understand Golson isn't at ND anymore. However, this is a discussion board and this is something that I would like to discuss. ; )

It is not about points per game to me it's about playing dominating football. EG may put up more PPG but have our defense on the field for over half the game and provide everyone with the drama of a last-minute come from behind win. ND will run a more smash-mouth, grind-it-out style of football with MZ in the game and the opposing defense will not even want to tackle our backs by the end of the game.

Golson in the pocket always looked like a house cat let loose on a freeway. Indecisive herky jerky movements with his feet and arm. Hardly ever took a drop and stayed calm and ripped the ball. Most drops always ended up in a State of Emergency.

I was most impressed watching Zaire pass vs USC. He stayed calm in the pocket and the ball came out on time. Arm talent is only about 35% of the equation and Golson was seriously lacking the other 65%.

I love the Zone Read element and mixed in with Bubble Screen constraint plays, ND can hopefully and finally incorporate all the Spread Principles we were promised. Which is attacking sideline to sideline and end zone to end zone at a super fast pace.

^ agree; with EG the team will reflect his personality and play a tougher more physical type of foitball.

IMHO, some of the best QBs in NCAA history weren't the most talented guys who put up big numbers. They were the ones who played with great poise & leadership when the game was on the line. That is huge at any level, but I'd take fire-in-the-belly, refuse-to-lose, leave-every-emotion-on-the-field type guys (Vick, Tebow, Cam Newton, Tommy Frazier, etc) in a must-win NCAA game over the big statistic type guys (Peyton, Mariotta, Wuerfel, etc.).

I'm not sure where EG fits, he might have been capable of bigger numbers, but I love what Malik brings to the field in terms of his fire-in-the-belly. When a tough game is on the line, I'll take it! Hopefully he can be the Southpaw Captain Sparrow and lead ND to the top over the next 3 years.

Putting up 400+ yards against UMASS and UVA won't make a QB a legend. Running out the clock and converting 3rd & goals and 3rd & short against Ga Tech to keep our defense on the bench will be huge.

I wouldn't put too much stock in what board members say. They are not at any practices, team meetings, position meetings, off season workouts, work outs we don't even know about, conditioning sessions, film sessions or staff meetings. In fact, no one here even knows anybody who knows anyone closely related to the program. It's all speculation, rough opinion, and sometimes wishful thinking. Your question is broad. We can't predict key offensive injuries on our side or even key defensive injuries on their side. We can't predict if this will be a season of turnovers or penalties at exactly the wrong time. In another words, it would be impossible to predict what QB would put up the numbers.

Right now MZ is the single most popular guy in ND football..................on this board anyway. What will it take for him to stay that way in the minds of the posters here? 9 and 3?, 10 and 2?, 11 and 1? 12 and 0 and an invitation to the playoffs?, win one round in the playoffs? win the NC?

Ahhh..........remember EG the Heisman Trophy front runner? How 'bout MZ?

It won't take much for some on this board to turn on MZ. None of really know MZ. The LSU game told us very little as EG was still contributing. We think we have a gauge on MZ but we don't. Crunch time pressure. Opposing stadiums. Rebounding from an errant decision that ended up a pick. Does he have the make up to handle all these things? We will get a better picture on the morning of October 4th.

If he kicks or punches kelly in the fruitstand during the Texas game that will make him very popular.

QB is the most influencial position on the field. As such eyes will be on MZ. The one thing we know for certain is that when the going gets tough MZ will not shrink from the challenge; he will fight till 60 mins are up. MZ is not the most physically gifted QB but he is 'one tough cookie'!

The key to the offense will be the game planning and whether the ND defense is consistantly putting pressure on the ND offense.
