Drew Pyne - Player of the Game against #4 Clemson

I was going to suggest to the OP to get a Riot Helmet and shield; bullet proof vest and ballistic underwear; and by the way an armored cup.

I get where Pyne could be the player of the game, with the other, more obvious choice being Benjamin Morrison.

But Pyne was in a position, where if he screwed up, it could have hurt badly, even cost us the game. He took a few shots, didn't try to force things, had a great scramble to set up our second first half TD, which, of course, he scored. That late TD and the way the defense came out in the second half were really pivotal in my view.

It doesn't change things -- Pyne is still a backup in a starting role, but he did what needed to be done on Saturday night.

No need.

Drew Pyne is 6-1 as a starter. 3-0 vs ranked teams.

He's undefeated vs ranked teams.

If he started last year and this year, this team is 9-0.
Him beating OSU....LOL

Drew Pyne is very fortunate our OL and defense and ST is so good.

Hes asked to do very little and sometimes he doesnt do that

Hed be like the 9th mvp of the offense sat.

5 OL, 2 RBs, 1 TE....then Id say Pyne

No need.

Drew Pyne is 6-1 as a starter. 3-0 vs ranked teams.

He's undefeated lifetime vs ranked teams.

If he started last year and this year, this team is 9-0.
Are you happier this way, the way things went, or would you be squealing with even louder delight if Pyne was actually the reason we won the game? That's a rhetorical question, so please don't feel you have to answer.

But every dog has his day, even little mutts like yourself. Why you have fixated on Drew Pyne as ND's preferred QB of the moment, over Buchner, and definitely over Jack Coan as of a year ago, no one will ever know. But Saturday was definitely a prime example of a team that got a huge, rousing victory, and it's coaches taking the challenge head on of explicitly game planning around their rather limited starting QB, and were able to manufacture enough points in spite of Pyne's limitations, and of course the defense and special teams is really what carried the day for us.....

And just for the record, I like Drew Pyne, I'm glad he's getting to enjoy this moment in the sun, and who knows, maybe he'll remain the starting QB even into next season and beyond....

This is 100% a strategic coach award to help boost a players confidence…. Pyne had a few good runs no doubt but did not play good

Joe alt literally obliterated a first round draft pick all night

I could sit behind that line and hand the rock off to Estime and Diggs 40 times too. 😂

Yeah but he didn’t flash start! Lol

Weird hearing freeman praise no pre snap penalties from pyne … he’s trying to get him some confidence

Yes!

Very smart move by him. Trying to give Drew some confidence.

Another plus for MF in being a head coach
Why would t Freeman want to give all of his players “confidence” ?

it would seem that when a player does the Conor McGregor strut, that he has all the confidence he needs.

And he was the single biggest reason they lost to Stanford. He's a place holder until someone better is available. No knock on him just acknowledging his obvious limitations.

I put that on Estime, the dropped balls, and the bad officials. It was a team effort. Also, Drew and his team learned the meaning of playing a rival. I'd rather he learn that against Stanford than Navy or usc.

But the worse loss of the year, and maybe the last 10 years, was to Marshall. And Drew wasn't in any way responsible for that.

But, take it up with Coach Freeman. He named him player of the game on offense. I just posted it.

He did throw an int against Marshall when we still had a chance

Oh please, he routinely missed simple high school caliber throws in that game. He was awful. His QBR was 28.6 that game. Terrible.

Zero picks. Threw a TD pass. The team had a bad game. So did Drew.

You're argument isn't with me, it's with Coach Freeman. He named him player of the game against #4 Clemson.

Well, Buchner threw the pick 6 with 4 minutes remaining. Then got pile driven into the turf to end his year, and probably his ND career. Drew came in after not playing in competion for ~1 year, drove downfield and threw a TD pass. More than Buchner threw all year. Then threw a pick.

If you want to dump the blame on Drew that's your choice.

Have you watched him play?
WHAT’S YOUR ALTERNATIVE ?

MY CONCERN IS THAT HE DOESN‘T COMPLETE THE THROWS THAT HE SHOULD COMPLETE AND THAT’S GOT NOTHING TO DO WITH HIS HEIGHT !

You are correct, however the batted down passes has everything to do with his height

The batted passes are definitely his biggest problem. Most of his picks were tipped at the line. Rees needs to scheme roll outs for him and keep him moving back there to get clear. I'm sure there is a resolution for this. His family are all QB's going way back and Rees should have some fixes for him. NFL history and CFB history are full of QB's under 6" .He has gotten better and it has happened less, but needs to continue to improve.

I didnt. Just stating a fact. And he threw the int first.

Then when the game was over, threw the td

You brought up alternative. Not me. All I said was he wasnt the mvp but it was smart by Freeman to give it to him for confidence

Yeah his height is a factor throwing over the middle. It's a problem

His best game was unc. Hes gotten worse Id say. Hes probably 5'10"

it took almost 40 minutes to score a point vs a bad stanford defense at home.

Yeah estimes fumble sucked, but that's 1 very bad play. Pyne had about 20 bad plays in the game minimum. We had 86 total yards in the first half. Evans penalty was worse than estime fumble. Evans penalty nullified a Mayer TD and we didn't score points that drive. That was one of the good throws pyne made all day

Agreed. His throws were so bad even the defense couldn't get near them. A QBR that low doesn't lie.

He was aces against both UNC and BYU, both good teams, even though I guess UNC's defense sucks, and BYU actually now has a losing record. But he's been pretty flat since then. And that includes the win over Clemson, or whatever, his numbers weren't any better. However, as I was saying, it didn't matter, because Rees schemed around him rather effectively.

So he gets game-manager kudos against Clemson. That's what game managing looks like. For future reference, when fans want to throw that term around inappropriately, like labeling Ian Book a 'game manager' with a smirk....
