I was concerned that Young would get burned by Navy as he still plays relatively wild and undisciplined, albeit increasingly effective against traditional offenses. I was a bit surprised he hardly saw the field, and even more surprised that Burnham played exclusively at SDE and Jr an equal amount at WDE or Vyper. Haven’t seen Sneed play so much Will linebacker all season, and Ausberry at Rover played a ton of snaps. All in all, pretty strategic moves by Golden.

What if they hired him instead of Weis? You think he would have been successful?
No. Timing. Now I think he could be successful. But a smart man according to Clint Eastwood knows his limitations. Not that golden has many but he is happy at ND and that is very cool. Him n denbrock

When playing Navy there really isn't a SDE vs WDE. Both sides have to do the same thing based on formation, not necessarily if you're on the field or short side.

But yes, golden clearly went with experience over talent. Not sure if it worked or not. We didn't make many good plays defensively, and had a few busts. You saw bowen struggle probably because he wasn't sure of what to do, on the flip side, sneed had his best game by far.

I was most shocked at how soft Gray played. They clearly were targeting him over Moore. Interesting.

They were obviously banking on Sneed’s speed, and he clearly had his best game. Thought Cross and Mills did a reasonably good job clogging the middle and keeping their OL from getting to our LBs. Sneed must have felt liberated not having to fight off 330 lb blockers with the smaller Navy OL.

Gray has been playing soft off and on all year imo. Kind of surprising given his skill set and consistent performance last year. Moore has been a stud and shockingly good. The development of him and Shuler has been huge…and Urlacher is knocking on the door.

Sneed and Ausberry should be playing more together on the field. Kiser needs less time(sorry folks, great kid but he should be nothing but a fill in)

Kiser played well against Navy. Probably our best LB that game

He's been solid this year. The 5 man LB rotation is working well

A lot of young guys getting time. Read an article that ND has 13 true- or redshirt-freshmen who are starters, regular contributors or reside on the Irish's two-deep depth chart. That is the most among the top 12 teams. Before Billy came back we had KVA, Ausberry, Leonard Moore, Knapp and Pendleton (five red shirt or true freshmen) starters.

He played a nice game for him. he should be playing well as hes 24 playing against 19-20 year olds. Need the younger more talented guys playing

Agree completely. The play of both Moore and Shuler has been a revelation. I thought Urlacher might see more game time against Navy, given how strong he has been against the run thus far. Bryant Young is another star in the making. And the play of KVA has been been off the charts. He is really good and really savvy for a freshman. We have ourselves a stud with him. I was screaming at the TV in the Navy game when the refs called him for unnecessary roughness. He made a textbook tackle of the QB and they whistled him for a penalty? That was a baffling call.

Kiser is playing well and leader of the defense.

That pathetic call even got Freeman overheated and going after the ref.

Kiser knows more about defending the triple option than any other player on our team. He was like having a coach on the field against Navy. Thought he played very well, and we can expect to see him play a ton against Army as well. I think he’ll play much less against Fl St and USC where speed and athleticism will be in high demand.

Fair assessment, I just like seeing the younger/athletics types

Army will be tougher than Navy. Navy turned the ball over in the first half which made the defense look better.

Agreed, but we shouldn’t discount the importance of the experience gained by Burnham and Jr and Sneed and Ausberry and Moore and Gray and Shuler defending the triple option for effectively their first time. I’m banking on the Navy experience to help make each of these guys a better defender against Army. But no one expects a six turnover game from Army, and we should expect to face a better defense.

I hope your right. It's gonna be knight and day playing the triple option in NYC and then traveling all the way to LA the next week to face a passing attack. 2 different worlds. Hopefully no more injuries on D.

Only issue I saw Saturday was playing cross and mills into the 4 th quarter. They should have kept some of our key starters on the bench once the game was in hand. Jmo.

Navy is known for causing knee injuries.
