*Disclaimer* I do not have a ton of knowledge on who is hot and available at DC. But what I do know is that BK MUST hit a homerun with this hire or he is next.

#1 Bob Diaco. Currently has a 10-20 record at UCONN with 2-3 record this year. I doubt he gets fired, but if he did man it would be nice to have him back.

#1 Dave Aranda. Has done great things at Utah St, Wisconsin, and LSU. With the HC changes at LSU now is the time to offer him $$$$$.

Everyone else...

Bo Pelini.

Tom Allen. Has turned IUs defense around this year. Leading the B1G in turnovers or TOs for scores (cant remember which) and they just look/feel different. Most of the points they have given up are from bad field position from offensive TOs or bad penalties after a 3rd down stop (bad ref calls and freshman mistakes).

Brent Venables. Lets be honest, this guy is probably going to get a HC job somewhere.

---------
What I do want --- someone from the SEC or Wisconsin/Iowa/MSU coaching tree. The latter 3 schools do not recruit better D players than ND but always play solid and fundamentally sound D.

What I do not want --- someone from BK's coaching tree (other than Diaco) or another NFL style blitz heavy coach (i.e. Van Gorder

first of all I would have taken a blitz heavy BVG .... he was overwhelmed to put it mildly. He had the best defensive player ...physical freak in a long time in all of college football...
And had him rush the QB twice. Two ****ing times in all of 2015.

Jaylon at OSU or Bama
Or frankly anywhere else with competent coaching might have won the Heisman. He easily could have been that ridiculously dominant.

I just want a fundamentally sound coach. That's all.

Wishful thinking never cost anything

But - do you think Kelly is actually going to hire a DC who is not one of his cronies?

If he stays his normal course that would likely mean Diaco (if he becomes available, which appears somewhat doubtful) and his ol' buddy Chuck Martin (of the 2, more likely available after another dismal season at Miami Ohio)

unless kelly really turns this season around, I think there will be a whole new coaching staff coming in next year. Even if Kelly stays, I think that most top DC's will look at ND , and feel that Kelly may not be around
much longer ? so if Kelly goes, we get all new coaches. If Kelly stays, he will be on the hot seat, and a top DC would be very hard to bring in!

I think Bo Pelini would be a nice hire. Don't know of his interest or not.

I was always partial to the guy at Boston College, but just became aware that he is now with the skunkbears as DC. Dammit, Harbaugh!!

Disagree. I think the "Kelly on the hot seat" talk is premature. His seat is lukewarm at best, and all will be forgiven should they make a good run the rest of the way.

Now........if he loses 4 or 5 of the next 7............

Kelly is not getting fired one year removed from a ten win season, where your three losses were to teams that finished in the top 5. Not going to happen.

I don't know what " A good run " is ? are you saying 5 - 2 the rest of the season is a good run ? that will give us a 6 - 5 season ! if we lose 3 that gives us 5 -6 season .
I think that Kelly will just about have to run the table or lose no more that one more game ? very difficult to do, and judging from what I see on the field , that will reqire a lot of " Luck of the Irish " to pull that off ?

With Charlie Strong out at Texas at the end of the year he would be great as a DC.

You're splitting hairs a bit. At the end of the season, taking the season as a whole, not on a game-by-game basis. Is two more losses acceptable, but not three?? I'm not talking that nit-picky.

If he goes 9-3, he's good to go. 8-4 or 7-5, I still think he gets a mulligan.
6-5 or 5-6 I think his seat starts to spark, but he's not getting fired. JMO.

Aw shucks. You are ruining their fun. Let them talk. You know and I know BK isn't going anywhere but don't tell them. Let it be our secret.

only way he gets canned right now after signing that 5 year extension is if sh*t hits the fan. we lose to nest and either navy and / or army and we are embarrassed by USC, or Stanford , Miami etc or some combo of that. Or Kelly is found cross dressing and visits the ladies shower.

7 losses would put him in the endangered species catagory. Jack would lose any credibility if he just shrugged off such poor performance.

Coach 8 & 4 will be here through next season. He ain't getting fired, unless we lose 7 games, then there might be some serious discussion. If Swarbrick were a very decisive manager, in a private business environment, he very well could, but not at a Catholic University. Not happening. And if you guys think if 8 & 4 loses 5 or more games any quality DC would even consider coming here - you're nuts. All these guys have firms that manage them. No agent would recommend a really good DC or DC candidate to come here and damage a promising career with 8 & 4 and this train wreck of a program. That is why I am saying, this is a (dare I say it) - death spiral. The more you go in the harder it is to come out - unless you blow it up. In time, current recruiting will bear this out. It's going to be painful.

1. Dave Arranda (LSU)
2. Todd Orlando (Houston)
3. Derek Mason (Vanderbilt)
4. Chuck Martin (Miami O)
5. Charlie Strong (Texas)

Not as painful as reading your non stop dribble. Go change your Depends.

Yes, forgot to add Strong. He coached here back in the 90s.

As far as Adazio, not too sure. I know his DC is not at Michigan unfortunately.

Bob Davie was fired the season after signing a 5 year extension.

Although White extended Davie's contract - Davie was originally hired by Mike Wadsworth....not Kevin White.

ADs are not usually so fast top pull the trigger on their own coaching hires (re: JS hiring BK).

Do you idiots watch college football? Texas defense is horrible.

You do understand that coordinators matter right? Vance Bedford is game planning for and teaching the fundamentals of the defense at Texas. Charlie is overseeing an entire program.

Charlie Strong did not forget how to coach defense, nor how to recruit. I think there issues at play. 1. Bedford isn't strong when it comes to being a DC. 2. Nobody in the Big 12 plays defense with the track meet style of offenses that exist in that conference.

Pennick. Money is no factor. Notre Dame has lots of it. That is why they had no problem paying Weis AND Kelly at the same time, for many years.

Here's what I do if I'm BK, I wait and see if mason is fired at vandy, he'd be my top choice if fired. Even though he's done poorly as a hc there, I think vandy would give him another year, they don't seem to be impatient and maybe can't be.

I'd certainly monitor strong at Texas as the next name. I don't think there is any doubt he gets fired, but I think there's probably a pretty good chance he'd either be a studio analyst while getting paid by Texas the last two years on the contract he signed, or he'd take a second tier hc job like Purdue or something. As a former nd coach with legit d credentials you have to call and try, he'd be a great recruiter too.

And in the more likely scenario that both those guys aren't available, the first call I make is mike Elko from wake forest. Guy takes mediocre talent and gets it done. He runs a 4-2-5 d as his base which I think plays well with the variety of schemes we face. More like diaco in that it's not blitz heavy and will keep everything in front of the d.

I'm not keen on bringing diaco back only because of his wacky recruiting requirements (size / weight) and the fact he isn't a good recruiter (outside of ishaaq he never got involved). I think you have to bring in a guy that can recruit like strong or mason, and I think elko being youngish would at least play well with kids. He may not be a big recruiting name I admit to not knowing but that is offset in this case by the fact that he takes mediocre talent and does a good job.

You don't know anything wannabe coach. lols

Well I guess he does because Steve Adazzio was the OL and OC at UF for Urban Meyer.
Not a Defensive Coach.

You are consistently a worm and a cartoon character. Same goes for the idiot who gave you a thumbs up.

BK has the same "social skills" as Saban, Meyer, Dabo and not much is mentioned about that. If you want an altar boy, then hire an altar boy. Basketball coaches are out of their collective minds courtside yet BK is the one and only coach that gets labeled.

Too bad for ND fans you are not Kelly - because what Kelly is more likely to do is re-hire his ol' buddy Chuck Martin, who may get his walking papers out of Miami (Ohio) after this season.
