If you're knowledgable and understanding of the situation they are probably the only two coaches out there that have the right amount of experience and that would take the job.

After what Bob Davie did to Wyoming last night I think that'll get some in here to stop mentioning Craig Bohl as an option.

The biggest names aren't coming here. That's no reason to keep the worst coach in D1 though. Anyone is better than Kelly.

PJ Fleck is impressive, but ND is a completely different animal than what he's experienced. Mullen has done a great job at a school that is annually a bottom dweller. I however don't buy the premise that ND can't get an elite coach. This is a premier program with a national reputation. I understand the points the naysayers say about academics, weather etc., but teams with high academic standards win as do teams in the north. ND has everything needed to compete with the best. There are no excuses. Keep Kelly or go after the best. Look at LSU. Orgeron may do a fine job at LSU, but what a cluster... They fire a coach that averages 10 wins a year and get one that was a disaster at Ole Miss. They fired their coach with no plan on going forward. ND doesn't need to make that mistake. Make a list of the best 5 coaches under 55 years of age and pull out the pocket book. $$$ talks.

Yeah, that overall 60-49, 29-35 conference record is just what the doctor ordered. That would be a huge improvement.

what is your plan? you seem to think inaction is a plan? what if ND goes your route what are your expectations? best and worst case scenario ? probability of 1 over the other?

ND's fan base is softer than Kelly's teams!

I like Mullen a lot. Other than Vandy, Miss State is the toughest place to win in the SEC.
Kentucky is not easy, certainly not after Louisville took football seriously.

But I agree with your point. Mullen has done a truly remarkable job in Starkville. He has hit that ceiling, and it can't be broken, not for more than 1 year, not in that division.

The "plan" is this: Swarbrick said Kelly is coming back. People on a message board have no say in the matter.

wow. those that cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it; never should have fired Weis?
What about nothing ventured nothing gained? what about reward comes with risk?
inaction is not a real aggresive plan. fail to plan then plan to fail.

Wow? Wow what? How would my "plan" have any bearing on the situation? And, you keep up with the Weis thing as though I said he should never have been fired. At the end, I did.

I live in the real world, and whatever plan I would have means absolutely nothing. Surely you're not living in a world of make-believe, where you and other posters have some sort of influence on the ND administration and the hiring of a new coach. If so, good luck with that.

Hill, let it go, the guy is a zero. You get to 28k+ post unless your literally have nothing else to do.

Mullen has done a fine job at Miss State, considering the division he's in.

Mullen is ok. At Miss St. you could recruit right from Mississippi prisons and could drop sacks of cash with recruits. If he can't do it there, he can't do it here.

Fleck is either the next Urban Meyer or the next Brian Kelly. We already have Brian Kelly. What the hell do we have to lose? If he is the next Meyer....we better catch that lightning in a bottle, or we are an eternal 7-8 win team

you really do not think fan/public opinion are factors. If that is the case they would not even play the games.
The collective voice does factor into it.

do fans cheer at games? why? If it is all pointless?

to win you make things happen; when things happen to you, you lose.

Not a bad choice. A few weeks ago IIO mentioned a Schiano also. I wasn't keen on him at first but after looking at what he would bring to the table I think he would be a very good hire. Notre Dame is so much different than most schools. As a coach you have to embrace everything that makes it special. Holtz was the last coach to do that. Kelly has not done that. In fact Kelly has pushed to change the traditions that makes ND special. The administration has allowed him to impliment those changes. Other than being a very good football coach, ND needs a coach who really believes deeply that Notre Dame stands for excellence in all aspects. When Lou Holtz spoke about Notre Dame you could see and hear in his voice how much love he had for the university. He was authentic and that authenticity came through loud and clear to the players. They bought in and really believed that playing for Notre Dame meant they were representing something much greater than just football. That is something that is lost. I believe it's still there. But you need the right messenger to deliver the message. Kelly has had 7 years and has not done that at all. He is a good coach. But he doesn't get it. Lou Holtz was interviewed at the end of the 1988 Miami game. He was asked how were they able to win. He said it was the "spirit of Notre Dame" that enabled them to win. That my friends is exactly right. He took no credit. The players he coached believed somehow they would find a way to win.
Holtz believed in the essence of Notre Dame and that belief permiated through his teams. If they can find a coach who " gets Notre Dame" they will be a force again.
