Curt Cignetti

I don't know much about the guy other than what he accomplished this season, which was definitely something. But he got his ass kicked tonight. Had no answers. And his little short passing schemes didn't seem to work. I'm not sure what else he could have done. They're obviously really good when their offense can click, but not tonight. ND was too good for them.

While he may be a very good coach, he has an edge to his personality that comes across as arrogance. On Gameday before the game--why was a head coach taking time away from preparing his team and coaching staff for the game to go on TV?--he responded to a question from Herbstreit about IU not beating any top 25 teams. He said, "We don't just beat top-25 teams, we beat the shit out of them." He then noted that when IU beat Nebraska they were ranked 25th and bragged that IU "kicked their ass." You can bet that will be bulletin board material for the next time IU and Nebraska play. Wasn't very classy on Cignetti's part. I have a feeling Cignetti won't be a popular guy with other coaches in the B1G.

I thought the same thing. Why would this coach use time prior to a big game to mouth off like that?

I like him but talking shit on Game Day was dumb. Saban gave him a bunch of shit after his rant . He is a bit full of himself.
The decision to punt late was laughable. Why not just pull out a white flag and wave it around?

I think it's probably part of his success, and the world at large just has to live with it. You know what I'm saying? You don't turn IU into an 11-1 playoff team by being a shrinking violet. It's possible that you could be all humble and deferential and still did what he did, but not typically, not in a sport like football. So if he's arrogant, that's maybe why he's successful and is part of his success. BK never acted like that, he's not arrogant, even though ND fans falsely claim he is. And he went 12-0 at Cincy and they would have made a 12 team playoff. So of course it can be done. But what IU accomplished was pretty impressive, and I don't think it's a big surprise their coach has a chip on his shoulder. That's how you motivate yourself!

IU's football program has been elevated. They now have an expectation to win and play in bowl games. Thats brand new in Bloomington....and its all good. Cignetti brought that. Like him or hate him....he's made quite an impact on college football this year.

Have you ever played competitive sports? Whether its impact is real or imagined, disrespecting your opponent is often a sure fire way to motivate them for the game.

It is one of those things that is real but hard to quantify. It won't overcome a wide margin, but can when things are tight. Motivation matters to us humans, as we're not bots.

BTW: MF was magnanimous in victory, praising Indiana. He is the last guy who will give the opponent any reason to play out of personal spite.

I defended him here a few weeks ago about something he said that I thought was somewhat accurate and hardly bulletin board worthy, and stated that I liked his chippiness, the little I had read. Full disclosure, I’ve now read and heard him more extensively, and I think he’s an ass with an outsized mouth and false bravado. “We don’t just beat top 25 teams, we kick the shit out of them”, etc…. Might be interesting if remotely accurate.

There is probably some truth to this. But there is a line between confidence and arrogance, and if you are going to cross that line you had better be able to back up your words or you end up looking really silly. I would say Deion Sanders is supremely confident, but I don't see him coming across as an arrogant person by nature. Geno Auriemma often crosses the line between confidence and arrogance, but his teams are usually able to cash the checks Auriemma is writing, and so he gets away with it.

Maybe Cignetti's schtick will rally his team and the IU fan base, but it's not going to look good for him if he doesn't support it with some wins. No question he did that this year for IU, but will he be able to continue that success? Then again, maybe he won't care. Charlie Weis' arrogance was endearing to some in the ND fan base (not me), but it sure wasn't a good look for ND when things didn't go so well on the field.

Loved Freeman with the sideline reporter stating that ND would let their play on the field do their talking. Was that a shot at the Indiana big mouth? Lets face it they played 2 good teams all year and lost badly to both. Congrats on not being the same old Indiana but had Oregon and Penn State been on their big ten schedule along with OSU they would not have been in the play off discussion.

Worse…after punting with 11 mins to go and down 17 pts, which sent those equally loud mouth Hoosier fans on their way….he calls TO’s on the last 2 drives and an onsides kick …

I think that is the essence of Marcus Freeman. The fire burns bright in his belly, but he is all about making his guys play up to their potential and making sure they stay in the moment. He is a class act all the way.

I found it a little odd that MF didn't seem as happy as I had expected him to be when the sideline reporter interviewed him last night immediately after the game. I thought maybe I was imagining things, but then I heard him go on the SVP show on ESPN about half an hour after the game and tell Van Pelt he would use the 2 touchdowns in the last minutes of the game and the botched onside kick return as a teachable moment for the team as they get ready for UGA. It was then I realized that was probably sticking in his craw after the game, even though the team had otherwise delivered an absolutely dominating performance. And that is what I love about MF; even when the team plays well, he is thinking, what can I do to help them play better?
