Announced tonight, torn ACL. CB depth is strong this year but Crawford had a shot to see time as the third CB.

He was pushing Farley at nickel. A tough break for the team and a sad start to the kid's college career.

From most media accounts he had jumped Farley at Nickel.. Wagers on who's next?

Nick Watkins and Nick Coleman have been impressing at corner and Russell has been getting reps at nickel as well.

hate to see this but this team has a lot of depth at a lot of positions this so it shouldn't really hurt

My 8-4 prediction is looking good. Hopefully Longo is fired after this season.

Next major injury I'll go with Shumate.

I had seen a single intelligent report that had him "ahead of Farley" at NB

What I had seen was that he was pushing for a role as the "small nickle" when we went to 3 CB looks, but was still in a battle with Watkins for that role (and Watkins was a major star of the spring and has been strong this fall, still the favorite as the #3 CB, with Russell sliding to the slot when we went to that look)

Farley plays an entirely different role, more of a hybrid Linebacker/Safety who is strongest against the run, blitzing, and covering RB/TE (not at all a 3rd CB)

We'll need Watkins to step and solidify his position to cover here

The practice reports from the last week or so saw Crawford taking 1st team reps. You might be right on his attributes but fact is Farley was taking reps at Nickel and mentoring Crawford at that position.

That report is in line with him being the "small nickle" role player

5th year senior and 4th year starter Farley was going to be the primary/base nickel

I think Crwaford woukd have played quite a bit against teams like Clemson and USC, that really like to go 3-4 WRs

Report from last week, let's not get twisted on your "small nickel" talk, Mathias and Crawford were battling for the same nickel position.

You can call it "getting twisted" if you want, but Crawford playing 'small nickle' and competing for time with Watkins and Coleman is the reality.

Farley wasn't really competing much with Crawford, as he's not at all a 3rd CB and would mainly be subbed out in the formations where Crawford would be subbed in no matter who is playing the 'small nickel' (and he still will)

Farley plays the hybrid position between LB and S, often termed the 'Bandit' or the 'Star'. He was competing for snaps with Onwaulu and Tranquill more than anyone else.

Crawford's injury removes the completion from Watkins (for the most part), not from Farley

Longo is at it again. I just read that Miami Dolphins safety Louis Delmas tore his ACL and is out for the season and Kelvin Benjamin of the Panthers sundered a torn ACL and is also lost for the season.

Crawford is a big loss. I agree with Decker. We have too many wide receivers. Kelly needs to bring in more defensive players. The season hasn't started yet. If more guys on D go down then we will need to score 40 points a game to win.

The volume of defensive players is definitely not the problem

Neither is the volume of WRs, when you consider that Russell has been moved to CB, Prosise has been move to RB, Farley to NB, Onwaulu to LB, Brent to hybrid RB, etc.

If you look at it, at least 3 of our starting defenders were recruited as WRs

You simply take the players who are too good to turn down, and then you find a way to get them into the field
