When I hear Kelly say, we have to correct the red zone; ,he has been the coach for 6 years and it seems to me that he still has trouble in this area .

Kelly doesn't really want to give up the offensive play calling ? Realize the offensive coordinator , Sanford makes some calls . Sanford was an offensive coordinator in his 1 year at Boise St.What is the purpose of hiring Sanford ? When you read about ND's offense ,some call it a tired one . Kelly may think Sanford is not experienced enough ,too young .

from what I understand denbrock makes most of the calls but Kelly has final say.

The numbers are really bad for their Red Zone efficiency. Some seasons wit Rees at QB it was understandable as being one dimensional. This season has been a mystery to me inside the RZ. Kizer can run, CJ is a top RB in the country and the oline is as good as BK has had. With latua at TE he provides a good lead blocker. I do not understand running Carlisle on jet sweeps ( USC ) or throwing it 3 times in a row ( Temple) . Creativity is lacking when it needs to be most prevalent. I am not saying to run the ball up the middle 4 times in a row. I am saying be in position to run/ throw every down but not be outmanned on the LOS. AS GREAT as Fuller is , ND does not really have that go to guy inside the 10 yardline. Robinson has been a major disappointment ( St. Brown ? ) . The 6-4 go up and get a ball guy is missing . Why not play action a little more on 1st down and sometimes a FG is not a bad thing vs. a solid team. Zero points is a killer. RZ offense is bad plain and simple.

Remember Bill Walsh's theory. Do the opposite of what they expect. And throwing to the tight end wouldn't be a bad idea either.

So Denbrock might want to reconsider the red zone approach then though I believe he' working within coach Kelly's philosophy of the offense.

Keep in mind that Kizer has the option to audible if he sees a favorable look from the defense. Folks can say what they want about the play calling but I am positive that BK does not send in plays that tells the offense to turn the ball over. People complain about whatever doesn't work - run didn't work so 'why didn't they pass'...pass didn't work so 'why didn't they run'.

My opinion....
I mentioned this in another thread that Brian Kelly has the most 4th quarter comebacks of any active coach.......
But Notre Dame in the last two years has the most red zone turnovers of any team in the land.

I think he out coaches himself in the red zone.
There is less room in the red zone and it appears to me he just coaches it like he were at midfield. Too many empty sets as well. It's ok to run the ball in for a score BK!!! They both count as 6.

NotreDame has a ton of talented offensive lineman that get virtually no pt. It would make sense to occasionally experiment with the idea of using an extra lineman. Maybe put a big kid in who played some offense in high school like Matuska as an extra tight end. Because the turnovers in the red zone is a worst problem than not scoring touchdowns. You shouldn't have to pass that much in the red zone unless the defense isn't it. Shotgun spread sets are to easy to defend with so little space unless your QB blazing fast which is not the case. I doubt BK is going to ever sign a full back out right unless its a preferred walk on type.

I was looking at last year's numbers when we were like 78th. Funny, Ohio State was like 55. Boise State however was 13. (Why can't Sanford help?) I like our offense in general -- Navy's coach praised the way Kelly keeps you guessing -- but we need a new wrinkle in the RZ. Remember Tebow and Urbie?

How about putting Kizer under center and going I-Formation, or hell, do a Wimbush package, that kid can fly and you can then attack around the end, or fool em and send Dexter Williams up the middle (the guy seems to understand running behind the tackles better than the other two.) I know, they are freshman and there is the chance for a fumble, but hell, we're turning the ball over anyway...

Just spitballing and I'm just a fan, never coached football. Tex? Any suggestions?

My guess is EVERY coach has input into the CALL SHEET...including Sanford. I would think/hope that if one coach has been favored to date that BK starts listening to others. Heck I'm okay with Booker calling them if he has the BEST play!!!

SCORE and BEAT pitt!!!

Personally I always liked & called POWER there. With Luatua we have the lead blocker to get it done. Heck put another OL in there too......but ya gotta commit to it on 1st down then get KIZER to keep it too with power. This can always open up the bootleg or fade or TE delay. So many calls......

BEAT pitt!!!

Come on its been six years of this garbage red zone offense. Stop blaming the fans. CBK makes 3 mil a year. Read the article on this site from a couple days ago. The national ranking every year is abysmal. It's time for him to step up.

I recall that was that it was his record, prior to coming to ND, leading heading into the 4th Q was very good.
