I was very surprised to see Matthais Farley named one of the top rookies so far this exhibition season. He appears to have a legitimate shot at making an NFL squad this year.

That being said, Farley was an important cog in the Irish's defense the past few years. Yet, in 2011 Mattias and Jalen Brown were the lowest rated (non-specialist eg. kicker, snapper) as rated by Rivals-5.5. It made be wonder if any other class's bottom ranked players proved to be important Irish players. It was pretty interesting.
2011 - Farley and Brown 5.5
2012 - CJ Procise and John Turner - rated 5.5. It's hard to imagine Procise (a stud and 3rd round pick) was at the bottom - he should play for the Seahawks if hamstring mends.
2013 - Devin Butler 5.6 (now in trouble but he has played meaningful minutes for the Irish)
2014 - Greer Martini and Mokwuah 5.5 - Martini has been one of the better contributors in his class and appears to have locked up a starting position. If what we read is tru, Mokwuah may play important minutes this year.
2015 Fertitta, Nick Coleman and Ashton White 5.6 - Fertitta will likely never be more than a special team player but that was expected. Ashtom White - Until recent charge, word had it that White was playing very well; Nick Coleman I believe will be a player this year. Great athlete.
Coaches seem to be doing excellent job evaluating players regardless of other ratings. Obviously some of these lowest rated recruits will earn their ratings.Conversely not all our top rated players contibuted either.
Highest rated for same years
2011 – Ishaq Williams, Tuitt 6.1 Tuitt - loud yes; Ishaq never panned out.
2012 --Kiel 6.1; Neal Davonte Neal 5.9 - Neither helped the Irish
2013 Redfield; Vanderdoes; Greg Bryant; Jaylon Smith 6.1- Star studded class only Jaylon proved to be 5 star for Irish
2014 Nelson 6.1 - Stud
2015 Wimbush 6 - Hopefully stud.
I am not bashing the rating system. I just thought this was interesting when I observed how well Farly and Procise did.
